Spillway Breaker Destroys Lake Fryer in Panhandle

The Panhandle lost Lake Fryer, 17 miles southeast of Perryton, when the spillway failed. The 102 acre lake, built by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, faced structural collapse after water seepage hollowed out concrete supports. Hailstorm Ravages Pampa Area With Heavy Damage

A powerful thunderstorm blasted the Pampa area with hail up to baseball size and north winds, hitting downtown and west of town. Cars suffered dented tops and broken glass, wheat damage reached thousands of dollars, and a 30 mile hail strip stretched from east of Pampa to Panhandle with drifts six inches deep. Rainfall near one and a half inches north of Miami and into Panhandle.

Fugitive Roark Delivers Flowers to Wife in Hospital

Adrian Leo Roark, 24, a fugitive, walked into Jefferson Davis Hospital and left flowers for his wife, Evelyn Roark, 24, who lay in critical condition from two gunshot wounds at a cafe in Addicks. Deputies said he visited her room briefly, then departed. A manhunt continues across Harris County for Roark after the early afternoon shooting at the Hitching Rack roadside cafe.

Amarillo Aerial Photographer Dies in Plane Crash

The body of William Foster Fletcher 406 Alabama was found in the burned wreckage of his Cub Super Cruiser aircraft five miles south of Amarillo after a storm. He was 38 and survived by his wife and daughter Carolyn. Funeral services are set for this afternoon at Boxwell Brothers Chapel.

Mom Relents and Saves Son From Prison

In Savannah Georgia on May 16 a 17 year old seaman Leon Hen son of Port Arthur Texas faced a two year prison term for smuggling Johanna Henrica Wagner aboard a freighter from Rotterdam. Judge Frank M Scarlett offered to suspend the sentence if the couple married. the mother relented after immigration officials were summoned and the girl was ordered deported.

Southwest Bell Strike Near Settlement in Texas Pact

The Texas head of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Workers union said a final company offer of a 4 dollar weekly blanket raise for all non supervisory employees was agreed. A settlement could come within 48 hours with talks in St Louis progressing and with meetings planned in Dallas Austin and San Antonio to inform workers. The dispute, a 43 day strike involving 43000 workers, centered on a contract and jurisdiction over outside plant workers.
