A B47 jet bomber on the Whiteman Air Force Base flight line caught fire and its exploding fuel tanks engulfed about two dozen firefighters in flames after the fire appeared under control. Four men died and 12 or more were hospitalized with burns and injuries, including several in serious to critical condition. Master Sergeant Clark R. Mahood described the sequence as flames erupted despite firefighters being near the aircraft and extinguishing crews working in the bomb bays. The cause was not determined and identifications were withheld.
The Federal Power Commission began an investigation into all wholesale electric rates of Southwestern Public Service Co of Amarillo. The probe covers 22 rate schedules serving three investor owned utilities and 17 rural cooperatives across TX NM OK. Meanwhile the FPC suspended 12 proposed changes that would cut coop rates by about 79,600 dollars yearly for five months through October 19.

Amarillo Girl Scout board votes by more than two to one against national plan to dissolve five councils and create an area council over 26 counties. After a three hour interpretation by national and regional leaders, the board adopted a three page resolution stating the plan is not acceptable to area volunteers and not in Scouting’s best interests.
