The Wall Street Journal cites a railroad president predicting few passenger services remain in five to ten years, with Paducah Kentucky the largest city without any rail service. Airlines already surpass rail miles, while some railroads still seek revival through costly changes.
In the four years ending Wednesday 501000 people visited Palo Duro Park with 137000 cars and 21 percent from outside Texas. Park operator Pete Cowart reports expanded facilities and praises the park as perhaps Texas’s most beautiful spot.
Texas oil associations called the House Ways and Means Committee action on the five year extension of the reciprocal trade program unsatisfactory. They criticized excluding mandatory oil and mineral quotas and urged including petroleum products to prevent evasion. Assistant Secretary of the Navy Fred A. Bantz arrives in Amarillo at 6 p.m. He will be the honor guest for Armed Forces Day observance Saturday and Sunday at Amarillo and Amarillo Air Force Base. The downtown parade starts 11 a.m. Saturday with about 2,000 personnel representing all services, under the theme Power for Peace. A fly-over by fast jet bombers fighters and trainers will occur at parade time and aircraft will be on display at AAFB during the open house weekend.

Paris on May 16 the French government sought emergency police powers to curb riots and rightist uprisings as Gen Charles de Gaulle threatened to return to power. Premier Pflimlin announced a state of emergency for continental France, excluding Algeria, as cabinet and President Coty met late at the Elysee Palace.
Vice President Nixon returns to Washington before a 100000 strong crowd. President Eisenhower leads reception with cabinet members and diplomats. Nixon calls for a reappraisal of policy toward Latin America to counter Soviet propaganda and safeguard ties.
The U S Weather Bureau predicts Friday and Saturday will be partly cloudy and warm with widely scattered thundershowers mainly in the afternoon and evening. Lows near 53 and highs around 78.

Borger Texas May 15 2700 members of Local 351 International Union of Operating Engineers walk out in 21 Phillips plants in the tri city area marking the first major labor stoppage since 1947. The orderly shutdown ended at the Alamo Refinery with no violence as 2300 other workers remained on the job.
