President Wilson, supporting free wool and free sugar in the tariff proposal, rejects any compromise and backs the House bill as Democrats' duty to enact. Senate set to vote on public hearings. Senator Thomas of Colorado defends free sugar in a heated exchange with Senator Root.
In Atlanta nearly 5 000 guests gather as the four church branches open a historic joint meeting. The Presbyterian Church in the United States Southern and United Presbyterians, plus Associated Reformed, organize and elect leaders as talks hint at eventual union. The merger of Northern and Southern branches is hoped for within a few years.
Brigadier General Frederick A. Smith, long in the infantry and commanding the Fifth brigade at Omaha, was placed on the retired list for reaching the 64 year age limit. A New York native and West Point graduate of 1873, he served in Indian campaigns, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, becoming a brigadier general in 1908.
The American Federation of Arts opened its fourth annual convention in Washington on May 15 with strong delegate attendance. President Robert W. DeForest of New York presided, and the program includes a reception at the Corcoran Gallery and a White House garden party hosted by President and Mrs. Wilson.
Boston May 15 Junius Spencer Morgan son of J P Morgan is named in his grandfather’s will to inherit a fortune and has been chosen captain of Harvard’s freshmen eight. He aims to lead the crew to victory over Yale while preparing to inherit the Morgan fortune and continue the family banking legacy.
R P Mahon a missionary from Morelia Mexico told the Southern Baptist Convention that armed intervention by the United States is the only path to peace in Mexico. He warned the country is in chaos without hope of leadership from its own people.
Boston hosts delegates from across the country for the seventeenth child welfare conference of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teachers Associations. National officers and managers inaugurate the program as the formal opening occurs tonight with six days of business sessions to follow. Noted speakers include Miss Julia Lathrope, Dr. P. P. Claxton, Dr. G Stanley Hall, Joseph Lee, Mrs Mary Woolman, F W Matthews, and Mrs Frederic Schoff.
The Pacific coast banking elite gathered in San Diego for the California Bankers Association annual convention. Greetings and officer reports dominated the opening session as visitors took an automobile tour to Point Loma and the exposition grounds. The event runs through Saturday night.
Testimony in the John Anhut bribery case recounts Thaw hearing that Dr. John W. Russell urged his release from Matteawan for a specified sum. Thaw cited Anhut visits in 1912 and a total spend of over 65 thousand dollars to win his freedom, separate from earlier Stanford White trials.

The Senate considered a resolution to establish martial law and try prisoners by military tribunal in West Virginia coal fields, while Mother Jones and labor officials protested in the gallery. Later, in Washington, Miss Fer cline Perkins married Lt. Robert Wallace at St John’s Church, with the wedding party ending at Fort Hy Allen, Vermont, where the groom is stationed.

Delegates from Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa Nebraska and other states met in Springfield to plan a campaign against the head camp action to raise insurance rates. The two day conference aims to organize for next year’s head camp election and gain control.
George W. Guthrie former mayor of Pittsburgh has been nominated by President Wilson to be ambassador to Japan. Baron Chinda has informed the President Guthrie will be persona grata. If confirmed he will face California’s alien land law dispute and work to settle the controversy with Japan.
Miss F J Heck urges modern efficiency methods at the Woman's Missionary Union's twentieth annual convention in St Louis proposing three commissions on efficiency to study questions and report next year. She calls for standardizing effort across districts and notes the need for a self supporting field and a union monthly magazine.

Washington May 15 Preliminary plans for the next campaign will be discussed at a meeting of the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee. Members include Mitchel A. Palmer of Pennsylvania Cato Selle of Texas Fred Lynch of Minnesota Clark Howell of Georgia and Homer Cummings of Connecticut. The group will map steps for collaboration with or without the Democratic Congressional Committee to build an effective net in the congressional field two years hence.
In Lafayette Indiana May 15 members of the Indiana grand council of the United Commercial Travellers opened their silver jubilee convention presided by Grand Councilor Edward F Leever of Terre Haute. Delegates and visiting ladies will enjoy planned entertainment as officers are elected and a 1914 meeting place is chosen with Btaville Fort Wayne and Terre Haute bidding for the next convention.
The County Grand Jury returned two indictments against Geo. H. Bixby a millionaire linked to offenses against young girls. He is to appear in court tomorrow to answer a contempt charge in the ongoing vice investigation. Meanwhile prominent leaders discuss in Cincinnati at the Young Men's Christian Association international conference opening today.
