Competing Laotian delegations balked at a Western-backed compromise as the 14 nation Laos conference opened in Geneva after a four day delay. Western and Soviet negotiators sought a united approach while factions from Vi en tiane and Pathet Lao disputed leadership and attendance.

A union spokesman declined to comment on the meeting's decisions.

Debris smoldered this morning after the Silver Grill Cafe was destroyed in Clovis New Mexico. The total loss was placed at 850000 with the cafe and equipment valued at 350000 and 250000 respectively. Seven other shops in the Village Shopping Center sustained at least 500000 in combined damage. Water and smoke affected nearby properties as firemen fought the blaze under windy conditions. Origin of the fire was not determined.
An armed robber demanded cash and silver from Jess Keeton at a Dallas grocery. When a customer interrupted the transaction, the robber allowed Keeton to return the bag after he could not make change. Keeton completed the sale and the robber fled with the bag.
Violent storms lash the mid continent with tornadoes and hail damaging homes churches and stores across five states. Reports indicate at least twelve injuries and a wide swath from Hannibal Missouri to Eureka Illinois along a 200 mile line.
