President Eisenhower declares it would be a fearful gamble to cut defense spending amid Soviet power. He defends the 71.8 billion dollar budget in a coast to coast broadcast, warns against immediate relief of tensions, and urges cost saving to reduce the public debt while keeping tax relief possible.
Tradewind Airport Corp president Shelby Kritser urged the Ama tillo City Commission to consider municipal ownership. The plan would have the city and federal government buy the landing facilities under a National Airport Act program with the city covering its share via a form of revenue contribution. The current owners favor developing the field as a secondary airport with no cash outlay by the city.
Washington May 14 Charges by natural gas producers that the Harris O Hara bill would retain tight price controls were largely supported by federal regulation advocates. Proponents said amendments sought by the Eisenhower administration would keep producers under similar controls and would require cost considerations by the Federal Power Commission to set prices rather than discretionary use of costs. The bill, introduced by Harris of Arkansas and O Hara of Minnesota, aims to free gas producers from public utility style regulation while conceding
Plainview residents approved four issues totaling 495000 in general obligation bonds. Street improvements received 592 for and 8 against. Water works 40000 with 409 for and 69 against. Airport improvements 45000 passed 306 to 168. Fewer improvements 20000 passed 411 to 68.
Area residents will view a vast display of America s fighting strength on Armed Forces Day at Amarillo Air Force Base. Highlighted by parades fly overs and dignitaries the two day celebration will display jets and propeller planes including a B 36 F 100 Super Sabres KC 97 s eight T 33 trainers and more. Gov Price Daniel will arrive at 10 30 a m Saturday for honors and an Armed Forces Day address followed by a 1 30 p m parade and luncheon.
In Austin on May 14 lawmakers divided over teacher pay raises and the state budget. Senate opposition and a House stalemate delayed action on the major appropriations bill while Sen. Henry Gonzalez pressed a second filibuster against school integration measures. Lt. Gov. Ben Ramsey brokered a tie on budget issues, and discussions continued with Gov. Daniel pressing for insurance commission reform now tied to a fierce debate between full and part time boards. The house focused on routine matters ahead of a 9 am reconvening.
In 1957, amidst weather notes for Amarillo and Dallas, Sen. Fry pressed for a compromise on a part time board plan. He urged a conference committee to draft a settlement, warning against dying in conference. Senator Moffett sought to override by moving Senate acceptance of the House version and sending the bill to the governor. The outcome of that vote remains pending.
Senator Alexander Wiley of Wisconsin urges adding microphones and loudspeakers in the Senate to improve hearing and understanding during debates. He notes many colleagues, including Lyndon Johnson, speak too softly, creating confusion for those nearby. Amarillo Sen Grady Hazlewood criticized Gov Daniel insurance reorganization bill as bad public policy that could destabilize state regulatory agencies. He opposed both the motion to accept house amendments and the motion to send the measure to conference eliminating the current board of insurance commissioners.
Donald S. Leonard, a nationally known police expert, told the Amarillo City Commission that the police department illustrates successful improvements since his 1955 survey. During a two day reappraisal he focused on traffic issues and stated there is no excuse for lax enforcement given the improved accident picture, noting only three street deaths in four months.
Amber traffic lights in downtown Amarillo have been retimed for more than a week. City traffic engineer Harold Miller said signals were adjusted early last week with no public notice. Downtown lights now run 3.3 seconds, with peak 5 to 6 p.m. at 3.9 seconds, reducing red light excuses and likely cutting ticket numbers.
