The Liberty freighter SS Flora C bound from San Francisco to Long Beach with a general military cargo lost its propeller in heavy seas 68 miles south of San Francisco. Coast Guard units searched the area after the ship became disabled at 4:32 p.m. PDT and had not located the vessel at its last reported position.

A shot from a hotel window killed Bernie Seawell in a rain soaked parking lot near the Sir Walter Hotel. Richard Kluckhohn, 21, a University of Chicago graduate, admitted firing the fatal bullet after being arrested in Chapel Hill. The 9 mm Luger with target sights and eight inch barrel was purchased April 21 in Chicago.
In Singapore a U S press correspondent and Southeast Asia manager died from injuries after a Communist inspired strike demonstration. The State Department ordered an immediate inquiry into the circumstances of the fatal beating by about 30 rioters and demonstrators.
Henryetta Oklahoma tale of a hitchhiking boxer found by Jack Hazen of Angleton Texas. After public praise and many offers to adopt the dog, Hazen locates the owners and returns the pet at personal expense. Owners reimburse $25 but a stop payment later returns the check.
Anita Lipton Warner, widow of Thomas W. Warner Jr., alleges foul play in his death and seeks an inquest. She hires a private detective to probe his associations with women while pursuing a court hearing on a $250,000 cash security and $600 monthly support.

A 24 year old woman, Ruth Papazian, fell from the Chicago New York Pace maker train 30 miles north of New York. In Canyon on May 13 Charles Eagle Plume of the Blackfeet told Panhandle Plains Historical Society members that White Man's early democracy came from the Iroquois Confederacy. The annual meeting also honored Amarillo oilman J Harold Dunn as president and saluted Harold Bugbee for murals at the Panhandle Plains Museum.
