London observers and British press anticipate Allied authors of war strategy will signal the start of summer campaigns. Washington talks led by Roosevelt and Churchill are viewed as giving permission for renewed attacks on Hitler’s Europe after the Tunisian setback.
A Senate military subcommittee urged creation of a super czar to unify war production. The plan would place a 12 member board under a president appointed head, including Byrnes Nelson McNutt and top service leaders, to fix authority conflicts and hit 1943 125000 plane goal and 1944 mass output.
Allied forces cap von Arnim and 150,000 Axis troops in Tunisia ending six months of fighting. The capture, along with several other German generals, brings total Axis prisoners to about 400,000. British and French units seal Cap Bon peninsula and push inland to quell remaining pockets.
President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill plan joint actions against Japan and Europe as top Allied commanders meet in Washington. Field Marshal Wavell Admiral Somerville and Air Chief Marshal Peirse join the talks along with Lieutenant General Stilwell directing American forces in China.
Allied air forces reported heavy bombardment of Sicily and Tunisia with Liberators and fighters striking Marsala Catania and Pantelleria destroying ships and damaging docks. Italian losses included 150 killed 300 injured at Catania with continued raids on Palermo Marsala and Potenza.
Washington May 12 Congress debates a plan to abate 1942 or 1943 taxes, whichever is lesser, as a current revenue measure. Senator Connally denounces the plan as inflationary while Senator Vandenberg defends it saying all taxpayers would be treated alike except high war incomes.
Fire at a trailer camp near the Cactus Ordnance Works north of Dumas claims the lives of Jimmie Miles 11 months and Robert Lee Miles two years old sons of Walter and Mrs. Miles. Mother away on an errand when blaze started neighbors could not rescue them. Bodies at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home awaiting funeral arrangements.
On May 12 1943 German resistance in Tunisia falters as Allied air power shifts to Sicily. French cruiser sinks a U boat supply ship while escort vessels destroy four U boats to protect a convoy. Russians push toward Black Sea defenses in another theater of the war.
The Civil Aeronautics Board authorized Braniff Airways to extend Route 15 from Amarillo to Denver via Pueblo and Colorado Springs for passengers mail and express. Pueblo and Colorado Springs flights limited to Fort Worth Dallas origins or endpoints. Service expected by mid summer once equipment is available.
Allied escort ships and aircraft fought an eight day battle against as many as 25 U boats attacking a convoy. Four U-boats were destroyed and four likely killed with two possibly sunk. Escorts including Oribi Sunflower Snowflake Vidette Spey and others contributed while Royal Canadian Air Force planes aided the hunt. By May 6 the attackers withdrew.
