Mescalero Apaches maintain a historic ranching operation led by a seven man Indian board headed by Bernard Little. The Growers Association runs a large cow calf operation with expansive pastures from 100 acres to 130 sections. Cowboys use specially bred dogs to gather cattle from rugged mountain terrain.
United Steelworkers vote to end a seven month walkout against Lone Star Steel Co a Northwest Industries unit. The two year contract expires Oct 15 1971 and includes a wage rise similar to last year. The company retains job rule prerogatives and recalls striking workers but may hire replacements.
News reports say the White House pressed Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas to resign as a House member prepared impeachment articles unless he steps down. Attorney General Mitchell met with Chief Justice Warren. Nixon urged restraint and party leaders discussed unrevealed facts about Fortas pressuring resignation.
Soviet built rockets slammed into a Saigon slum district as Viet Cong attacks mounted. Five Saigon troops and police were killed or wounded, including three Americans. A 122mm rocket destroyed a house in Ban Co area, killing four and wounding eight. Police captured two Viet Cong women while a Viet Cong fighter was killed in a separate mortar incident near an elementary school. Fighting followed a period of heightened terror across the capital with multiple bomb and grenade strikes and a clash near UN forces headquarters.
Lt Cmdr Peter Goddard, 32, set a world best from New York to London finishing five hours one minute two point nine eight seconds after departing from the Empire State Building. A nationwide manhunt spread for two jailbreakers, Johnny Vela and Jofila Gonzales, who escaped Mortain County jail and are considered dangerous.
A jury trial date of July 7 was set in Aztec for a civil suit seeking 1.5 million dollars in compensatory and punitive damages from Rebiel Lopez Tijerina Juan Valdez Baltazar Martinez and others over the June 1967 Tierra Amarilla courthouse raid.
