In Our Town three Amarillo men accuse the Potter County Sheriff's department of holding them overnight without just cause after a downtown nightclub disturbance a week ago. Police and county officers search for a knife wielder suspected of raping a housewife in Amarillo and assaulting a resident at Northwest Trias Hospital.
Texas Masonic group will pay an official visit to Amarillo this Saturday with activities noted on page 20.
California teen Paul Eric Krueger confessed Wednesday to shooting three fishermen to death during a bizarre voyage from Texas toward Venezuela. The admission followed his earlier rebellious episode and ties to a Venezuelan-bound plan.
Paul Eric Krueger 18, son of a California industrialist, pleaded guilty to the murder of three Corpus Christi fishermen. He was sentenced to two life terms after long efforts to seat a jury in Dallas. The case involved trials in Kingsville and Brenham and centered on the Laguna Madre reef incident.
Leon Wisely owner of The Reveler nightclub and two employees say Potter County deputies jailed them after going to the sheriff to file complaints about disturbances by West Texas State University football players. Wisely says he suffered injuries and was denied medical care. Sheriff’s Sgt. Ped Hunt denies the accusations, saying the men were argueing and creating a disturbance across from the Crossroads Motel.
U S and Vietnamese frogmen recovered weapons from a sunken Soviet and Chinese arms freighter sunk by U S air strikes off the Mekong Delta. The 120 foot vessel held 50 tons of munitions for the Viet Cong including Red Chinese machine guns and Russian weapons. The sinking, near Vung Ro Bay, marks the largest arms shipment disrupted since February 1965.
Defense Secretary McNamara announced the manager of a U.S. military PX in South Vietnam was fired after importing between 142000 and 600000 cans of women's hair spray. Two senior official inquiries into Saigon black market activities followed, with Morris and Bartimo leading the probe.
The Soviet fishery ship Chernyakhovsk was granted permission to enter Drake’s Bay near San Francisco for engine repairs after officials in Washington allowed entry for inspections. Cargo transfer to another Soviet vessel was denied and inspectors from Immigration Customs and Public Health would board, while other Soviet vessels remained offshore.
Amarillo detectives and Gray County officials seek a knife wielding rapist feared to be the same man who raped and robbed a Pampa woman on April 28. He allegedly entered a second Amarillo home April 25 and cut a housewife on the hand with a pocket knife during a struggle.

In Hawthorne California a talking traffic signal installed near a school warned pedestrians to look both ways and check the light during school hours. The device spoke at 1130 PM Tuesday for over an hour, waking residents in pajamas before police silenced it by hand.
