Amarillo banks prepare new or remodeled facilities as First National plans a post war skyscraper near the Davidson Hotel site. American National Bank will create a merged front by combining adjacent structures and remodeling the 1941 remodeled Amarillo National building.
Gov. Allan Shivers cites rising felony crime in Texas as the FBI report on cities over 25 000 reveals Amarillo's murder rate near the national average. Comparisons show Oklahoma City Fort Worth Denver and others with different patterns across murders robberies and auto thefts.

In San Jon New Mexico last June 22 Tex Thornton explosives expert met a man and a woman at a bar before his battered body was found the next morning in Amarillo. Evald Johnson on trial for his life testified as witnesses described the sequence with the 30 year old defendant’s confession and the cautionary notes on confessions. Popejoy testified Thornton left money on a table and urged others to take what they could while reserving some for him as the night progressed.
Atty Gen Price Daniel said his anti trust staff are probing a one half cent per gallon rise in gasoline posted last week by 10 major Texas refineries. The increase mirrors the first since the state filed an anti trust suit against the firms on Feb 21 1949.

Washington sources say Moscow may produce an alleged crew member confession from the US Navy plane lost April 8 in the Baltic. The official notes Russia hurried to salvage wreckage and retrieve all 10 occupants, while detailing four Russian fighters firing on the patrol plane and the craft burning before hitting the water over the Baltic, far from the Russian coast.

A head on collision on US Highway 66 seven miles east of Groom claimed William Russell Asrey death at 55. Four others were injured including Ernest Usrey 26 Willie Stowe 20 Arleigh Mackey 29 and Mrs Mackey 28 in critical condition.
Amarillo National Bank will add a new structure next to its 401 Polk building, enlarging facilities by over 50 percent. Plans call for a full basement, moved loan departments to the ground floor, and a larger lobby, with remodeling of the existing building to follow. Bank president Charles Ware says expansion matches Panhandle growth. site will use the former J E Griffin brick building at 405 Polk.
Ewald Arthur Johnson was arrested in Munising Michigan on February 9 and within about 36 hours allegedly confessed to the Tex Thornton murder to state police and FBI agents. He was transported to Amarillo February 14 where Assistant District Attorney Branch T Archer Jr and Sheriff Paul Gaither obtained another statement. The FBI confession has not been used in trial yet. the local statement opened the state's case. The document records Johnson's voluntary admission and warnings given. he states his name and birth date February 13 1920 in Munising.
L. C. Owen, 59, former Amarillo carpenter, is charged with murder in the slaying of Lyle McCune, Cimarron County ranch employer found shot to death May 5 near the Chenault ranch house. Sheriff Warner and County Atty Butler led the week long investigation. Owen and W. L. Billy Chenault Jr., 36, were taken into custody.
Congressman elect Ben Guill departs for Washington on Braniff and American Airlines with a party including Mrs. Guill and several Texas residents. Official certification of results may reach the secretary of state today, enabling Guill to be seated Monday.
