Officials at the West Texas Chamber of Commerce proposed using the organization as an agency to obtain government aid for member cities. The convention also urged state participation in relief work and discussed a proposed $20,000,000 bond issue.
Wilbur C. Hawk, president of the W. T. Co. C., says he has not discussed a second term and will not accept if offered. He cites poor health and aims to conclude the convention, planning his service as president to end Saturday.
A conference group supports approving a bond issue to back relief funds, countering a convention panel that urged continuing without bonds. About a hundred towns sent officials and federal reps to hear project ideas for federal loans and seek procedural guidance. Bandeen pledged exhaustive efforts to aid city applications and noted the chamber offers free public works, engineering, and legal services to members.
Washington May 12 Representative Marvin Jones of Amarillo, chair of the House Agriculture Committee, dined with President Roosevelt at the White House. Also attending were Hull Woodin Ickes Pittman McAdoo Rayburn Reynolds. Friday Jones will attend the signing of the farm relief measure and receive the pen used to affix the presidential signature.
Partly cloudy Friday with possible light showers across Amarillo and West Texas. Panhandle mainly fair with scattered showers, New Mexico mostly fair in the south but unsettled to the north with showers possible and cooler in the south. Temperatures show highs around 80s to mid 80s and lows in the 60s to 70s with variable coverage.
Gov. Miriam A Ferguson signed a measure to put a beer legalization question on August 26 statewide ballot. Voters will decide if Texas amends the state constitution to allow beverages up to 3.2 percent alcohol and establish licensing rules for manufacturers and retailers. Local option elections may occur any time after July 1.
Federal Court in New York selected a jury to hear the Charles F. E. Mitchell tax fraud case. The defense faces charges that Mitchell defrauded the government of 858000 dollars in 1929 and 1930, with a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment and a 10000 dollar fine. Jurors heard testimony on securities sales involving W. D. Thornton and Mrs Mitchell, and government witnesses noted connections to Paul Cravath and Brock Pemberton.
In Austin on May 11 Rep H K Stanfield of Amarillo urged the education appropriation committee to raise West Texas Teachers College Canyon per capita funds from $180 to a total of $150000, citing higher labor and fuel costs.
The state affairs committee in Austin postponed tonight's meeting to next week. It planned further hearings on the income tax bill and on a bill to authorize a state highway through Kenedy County.
Attorney General Cummings announced the denial of pardons for Pete Chavez and Jack Cleary of New Mexico, convicted in connection with the Saratoga sweepstakes lottery case.
C W Carson of Amarillo is named assistant to Farm Loan Commissioner Paul Bestor and will direct the direct loan provisions of the farm mortgage act set to become law upon signing by President Roosevelt. Morgenthau announced the appointment, noting Carson’s preparedness and prior banking experience in Spearman and endorsement by Senators Shepard and Connally and Representative Jones.

Morgenthau announced an immediate start to mortgage relief refinancing for farmers once the relief bill is signed. A $200,000,000 reconstruction fund will be available within hours, with the first loan Monday. Refinancing of farm mortgages will begin within two weeks via land bank bonds, with up to $5,000 per farmer and 5 percent interest.
A favorable report on the Bratton Cutting Pueblo relief bill was authorized by the Senate Indian committee after a poll by Chairman Wheeler. The measure provides 761000 dollars for New Mexico Indians to repay land lost to white settlers and will be pushed next week by Senators Bratton and Cutting.

A May tornado in Brownwood and nearby Delaware and Jones Chapel communities killed three people including 60 year old Mrs. J. W. Arant and children Virgie and Arthur Richardson. Seven were injured. about 100 houses damaged and power plants damaged. National guardsmen provided shelter for six homeless families.
Denison Iowa May 11 formal charges of conspiracy to hinder the process of law and contempt of court were filed against 22 men linked to a farm foreclosure sale riot. Martial law ended two counties, bonds set at 3000 each on conspiracy and 1000 on contempt. Ringleader Frank North faces a separate trial.

Witness Gaston B. Means testified in Washington that two men twice tried to deliver the Lindbergh baby in March 1932 and later showed him a child in Aiken. He identified the alleged conspirators Wellington Henderson and Irving Penton and described the ransoming scheme tied to Mrs. Evalyn McLean. Means, a convicted swindler, spoke as he sought to sidestep conspiracy charges against himself and Norman Whitaker alias The Fox.
A 57 year old son who moved his father's body wrapped in a blanket in a car from San Antonio to Bonham was arrested by detectives and held for observation by county health officer Dr. T N Goodson.
