U S Marines clashed with a large North Vietnamese force on South Vietnam's coast near Da Nang. In eight hours of intense combat 92 enemy soldiers were reported killed while 19 Marines died and 72 were wounded. The action centered around Que San between Hoi An and Tam Ky, about 25 miles south of Da Nang, with about 1 500 Marines of the 3rd Marine Regiment engaged. U S Navy jets attacked Haiphong power plants and a MIG airfield at Kien An in the suburbs of Haiphong, marking the first raid on Kien An. three of six North Vietnamese air bases remained untouched. The fighting zone lies about 75 miles south of the DMZ, where Viet Cong positions are within range of the coast bases a Da Nang Hoi An Tam Ky and Chu Lai. Initial contact occurred at 12 29 p m Wednesday as more Marines were deployed.
Senator Richard B Russell D Ga seeks to end the requirement for two year draftees to serve three years in active reserve training urging a four year extension of the draft system he chairs the Armed Services Committee and says millions of youths escape both active and reserve duties while his panel weighs House draft changes.
A UPI report from Dallas says an experimental vertical takeoff plane from LTV Aerospace crashed during a test by John D. Omvig 43 of Arlington and Stuart G. Madison 39 of Irving near Mountain Creek Lake killing all four aboard. Charles E. Jester 34 of Irving was in the rear.
The Agriculture Department lowered Texas wheat output to 59,598,000 bushels from 60,423,000, citing drought and farmers plowing under fields. Texans planted 5,493,000 acres with May 1 harvest projected at 3,132,000 acres, well below last year’s 72,652,000 bushels and the 1961-65 average.
