At the Geneva talks the Soviet Union pressed to seat Communist East Germany as a full participant, a move rejected by the Western powers. The dispute casts doubt on the Monday opening, with officials saying the issue could still be resolved before the first session.
Dr Carl E Bates longtime pastor of Amarillo First Baptist Church announces resignation effective June 1 to accept the pastorate of the First Baptist Church in Charlotte North Carolina. He cites fruitful years and notes church growth including 6454 new members and 2 143 baptisms, with property value rising to near 3 million and annual budget grows from 241 500 to 655 000. He will take a month vacation before moving and a sermons book is planned.
Nine tornadoes struck Central Texas with heavy winds and hail. Six people were injured and damages exceed 250000 dollars. A northern Austin twister destroyed a residential and industrial district, while other funnels damaged farms, barns, homes, and utilities across Abilene, Hearne, Corsicana, George West, and nearby towns amid widespread flooding and road closures.
An Indian source says about 250 Russian troops traveled via Gyantse toward Phari and Yatung to aid Chinese Communists against Tibetan Khampa rebels. The report claims Khampas killed Chinese in a gorge near Gopshe before Panchen Lama forces, allied with the Communists, dispersed them.
A former Nazi army officer Lt Kurt Rossmeisl aged 52, who says he escaped from Camp Butner North Carolina in August 1945 and lived in Chicago for 14 years, was arrested in the Federal Building Cincinnati after setting off an alarm today. FBI agents identified him and he faces custody as a Nazi sympathizer and former POW.
High winds destroyed four outbuildings on the William E. O Loughlin Ranch five miles west of Miami on U.S. 60 at about 4 p.m. Sunday. A chicken house two saddle houses and a cake feed house were flattened while four ranch house occupants escaped harm. Foreman Homer Ratliff Jr his wife and two children were in the house but unharmed. The wind scattered tin roofing and riding gear across a quarter mile stretch. Weather notes report showers earlier Sunday and a cool front bringing cooler conditions with forecasts of a 71 degree high for Amarillo and generally fair skies across the Panhandle and South Plains.

An Amarillo man Lloyd Orville Misener 36 died early Saturday when his car ran off FM 296 near Texline overturning after striking a stop sign. Misener a painter lived in Amarillo 33 years and was visiting his wife’s parents. Survivors include his wife two daughters his mother two sisters and grandparents. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
