Benedict Dies of Heart Attack at Texas University
Dr. H Y Benedict aged 67, president of the University of Texas for 10 years, died from a heart attack near the campus while en route to a conference. He led the school since 1927 after long service as a professor and dean. Governor Allred and the Legislature mourn the loss as the capitol lowers its flag to half mast. Benedict, born in Louisville, had spent most of his life at the university, with sons Yandell Jr and Carl Stone Benedict, the latter killed in World War I. He was to debate appropriations with a legislative committee when the fatal attack occurred.
