Government data show upturns in farm employment and retail sales. Agricultural measures indicate farm payrolls rose in April, bringing total farm workers within about 1 percent of the year-ago total.
Auditors retained by the Amarillo City Commission began a probe of purchasing and accounting records as part of a study of grand jury charges against city operations. The commission said a decision on the grand jury recommendations is expected Wednesday and that investigations into witnesses and records will continue. The grand jury urged immediate dismissal of city manager N. V. Moss finance director J. C. Lilly and parks director Mark Miles, plus dismissal of shop superintendent Orville Deaver and mechanics Forrest Allen and J. B. Allen. It recommended retaining assistant city manager Leland Nelson only until a new city manager is found. The panel’s findings were unanimous and also questioned several officials' actions against the city charter. officials deny the charges and will present affidavits with supporting facts.
Week of April reports 7 368 000 acres with a 20 percent rise from late March. Forecasts predict a winter wheat crop near 1 010 000 000 bushels and strong hay and forage yields. The upbeat farm outlook may ease farmers' earnings but could strain officials grappling with crop surpluses. Housing activity also rose.
Twenty four coal miners escaped from Boone County Coal Corp No 2 A mine after a two acre pond flooded the tunnels. Water backed up blocking the tunnel while four men used an air shaft to reach safety. No injuries reported. The incident occurred at 1 p m on Thursday following heavy surface rains.
Weather data shows Amarillo having 108 sunny days out of 138 in 1958. Friday readings at 3 PM list Houston Dallas and Oklahoma City with cloudy conditions and varying wind speeds and visibility.
Andrew Knutson says he supports his wife Rep. Coya Knutson running again for Congress only if she fires her handsome male secretary Bill Kjeldahl. He jokes about moving to Washington if Kjeldahl is kept. The Star reports Knutson plans a third term and Kjeldahl would stay in office.
Wellington reader D. E. Scott criticizes editorial writers for loud business on consumer price increases while labor wage boosts affect the poor End Man. He suggests editors are wage earners and few farmers write in, and voices rural frustration about editorial bias.
Weather bulletin notes showers and hail across the Panhandle and South Plains with a repeat forecast for today. Amarillo is forecast around 70 degrees after a 48 degree morning. hail up to half an inch reported in Clovis with gusty winds to 50 mph.

National League results had St Louis 3 Chicago 2 Pittsburgh 1 Philadelphia 0 in 12 innings. Milwaukee 5 Cincinnati 4. San Francisco 11 Los Angeles 3. American League tallies showed Chicago 5 Cleveland Detroit 7 Kansas City 1 Boston 13 Baltimore 5 New York 9 Washington.

Borger May 9 workers at the Philblack Plant continued on the job as bargaining agents warned a possible strike at 4 p.m. when the Phillips Chemical Co contract expired. About one third of Local 351 members at Phil lips plants in Borger could join if a strike occurs, while 500 union members in the butadiene section have been on strike since May 1.

A Clarendon High School and Clarendon Junior College science group launched two rockets at 3 p.m. on the Red River north of Lelia Lake on W. J. Lewis’s ranch. The second rocket rose nearly a mile, marking a major success after a 200 foot first attempt. W. W. Cooper, chemistry teacher, advised the team drawn from the high school chemistry class and the college physics class.
Detroit man Russell N Jordan testified he turned illegally on an expressway after following a police car ahead. Patrolman Joseph Borris said he was chasing another motorist when Jordan followed him in the illegal turn.
Frank Shaller of Canadian was elected president of the Panhandle Plains Historical Society for the coming year at the 37th annual meeting in Canyon. Floyd V. Stude of Amarillo was succeeded. new officers include Ernest Archambeau, C. P. Buckler, Dr. Hattie M. Anderson, and C. Boone McClure. Dr. Anderson named educational director. new board members Dr. J. T. Powell, Lewis P. Fields, and C. Richard Wagner.
The Agriculture Department forecast Texas wheat production at 67,944,000 bushels for 1957, more than double last year's 33,669,000 and well above the prior month’s 56,608,000 bushels. The rise reflects favorable moisture and higher planted acreage across the wheat belt.
Planted acres total 3 576 000 this year vs 3 159 000 in 1957 while last year harvested 2 322 000 acres. Texas average yield 19 bushels per acre up from 14 5. Production would exceed 10 year average by over 20 million bushels. National forecast rises to 1 009 754 000 bushels, up 46 118 000 from last month, not including spring wheat which Texas does not produce.
The Amarillo Jet Journal was named tops in the Class TIT newspapers of the United States Air Force. Brig. Gen. William L. Lee presented a letter of commendation and plaque to editor Joe Yakubisin and staff during informal ceremonies at Gen. Lee's headquarters.
The ceremony honored Lt. Bob Musgrave Information Services Officer Don Sturgis feature editor and Ed Straley sports writer. The Certificate of Achievement came from the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force and was signed by Maj. Gen. Arno H. Leaham Director of Information Services with headquarters in Washington. It expresses pleasure in forwarding the Certificate of Base Newspapers Achievement for each person on the team. Continued on Page 2.
