In a surprise 7-2 decision on Monday the Supreme Court extended First Amendment free speech protection to so called girlie magazines and spicy paperback books. The ruling limits government action against such publications and signals a broad defense of mature content.
Amarillo architect Clayton Shiver told Randall County commissioners their courthouse is antiquated and a new building should be considered instead of remodeling. A proposed plan outlined at a Panhandle meeting envisions a statewide system of recreational scenic and historic routes. A bill would establish a separate board of regents for the university.
Potter County commissioners plan to send Cas Johnson to an Austin emergency session to brief on Senate bills 227 to 230 about forming regional councils for small governments. Two men died after a boom truck struck an overhead power line at a Liberal oil well. George W. Womack 47 and Larry J. Hood both died en route to Southwest Medical Center. Clovis Smith 18 witnessed the accident and described Hood’s fall and Womack’s attempt to help. Burial plans were set at Campbell Funeral Home in Liberal.

Justices Harlan and Clark dissented. Separately, the court left intact 1964 Times Square antiwar demonstrators' disorderly conduct convictions, with Douglas and Fortas dissenting.
U S Air Force jets from Thailand struck the Hoa Lac MIG airfield west of Hanoi for the fifth time while carriers Enterprise and others pummeled Haiphong vicinity. In Vietnam Marine outposts near Leatherneck Square faced rising casualties with 44 Marines killed and 140 allied wounded.
The moon will pass between the earth and the sun today creating a partial eclipse. The Texas Society for the Prevention of Blindness warns that looking directly at the sun risks permanent vision loss even with sunglasses or smoked glass. It advises punching a pinhole in cardboard to project the sun’s image onto another surface.

A 6 foot 10 inmate Emmett Ray McCarthy escaped from University Hospital during surgery. He seized a guard's pistol, abducted seven people including two policemen, and terrorized seven counties before a highway patrol stop ended with his capture in Marietta. He had multiple weapons but fired none.
