Rome visit frames Amarillo proposal to replace Polk Street Mall with a Venice style canal. Petitioners seek gondolas and gondolettes, while observers note Rome’s housing struggle and urban contrasts, urging self-improvement over mass government housing.
Randall County will collect at least as much tax money in 1961 as in 1960 despite valuation cuts. Assessor Bill Money said increased values, especially rural lands and pipelines, will yield about 33.27 million dollars on a 15 percent schedule. The 1960 total was 32.46 million from 20 and 25 percent schedules. Money noted Amarillo area shares about 62 percent of valuations with rural land at 38 percent. The 1961 tax rate remains 1.26 dollars per 100, plus 42 cent state tax and 30 cent bridge and road fund in some cases. Money will notify properties with raised assessments and urges timely office visits to avoid board of equalization.

Cleburne May 8 former night captain Tom my Petropolous testified in 18th District Court that he refused a $100 bribe offered in December 1958 by G R Bulkin. Bufkin later went on trial on charges of attempting to bribe an officer. Petropolous said Bufkin gave him cash and a slip with an unlisted number for a Steak House four miles east of Amarillo. He returned the money and explained he would not accept it. He said he did not report the attempt due to distrust of Potter County enforcement and fear of officials.
The data notes Amarillo had sun on 120 of 128 days in 1961 with comparative readings at 3 p.m. on Monday. Wind speed reached 18 MPH, visibility 15 miles, sky partly cloudy. Additional brief items list Houston and Ely locations with similar metrics and a reference to Petropoulos on page 2.

The Texas House approved Rep. DeWitt Hale’s 800 annual pay raise by a 143 to 4 vote and tentatively backed a redistricting bill adding new seats to Harris Dallas Potter Taylor and other counties. Gov. Price Daniel warned he would veto the House sales tax plan, calling it unfair and likely to trigger a special session. He favored a broader selective tax approach.
NATO foreign ministers across Europe united behind Secretary Rusk in Oslo pledging to preserve Allied rights in West Berlin. Khrushchev’s Berlin demands and plans to internationalize the city prompted the show of unity as ministers debated strategy and issued note guidance to Moscow.
In a committee session chaired by Wilson and E B Germany of Dallas Lone Star Steel, Daniel pressed Rep George Hinsons sales tax bill meant to raise 116.5 million yearly. Wilson backed a measure targeting 265 million over two years. An attempt by Rep Jack Woods to reduce starting teacher pay but boost experienced pay was defeated by voice vote. Hale argued his plan would yield 5760 more per teacher over ten years than Woods amendment. Rep Bill Jones of Dallas failed twice to trim the raise amount.
In Borger on May 8 special report, Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Local 3463 plans a 7:30 p.m. meeting to present a proposed contract to end a January strike at Phillips Co. Copolymer Plant. A Wednesday referendum will decide ratification. Over 400 workers affected.
Johnny Sugg a 42 year old foreman for Ace Metal Products Inc fell 78 feet from a parapet at a metal tower site in the 2700 block of East 2nd landing on his feet with only a sprained ankle. He was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital and kept overnight for observation. Witness Billy Wilkinson said Sugg lost his footing while preparing to weld seams.
