The Agriculture Department raised its final 1950 U.S. cotton crop estimate to 10,012,000 bales valued at 2.355 billion dollars, down from 1949 and below the 10-year average. Texas harvest is 2,946,000 bales, with 7,048,000 acres planted and 6,709,000 harvested.
Gov. Allan Shivers signed a law mandating annual automobile inspections to remove death trap jalopies from highways. Cars failing inspections lose license tags. inspection covers brakes lights horn and steering. The measure takes effect 30 days after the session ends and was shepherded by Rep. Jerry Stewart of Fairfield.
Dallas May 8 W. Victor Womack regional price executive for OPS says wholesale beef price regulations amended to give packers and wholesalers three extra days to dispose of ungraded beef acquired before yesterday. The extension runs through May 11 to ease hardship while new ceilings take effect. Retail ceilings remain unchanged and take effect May 14. A separate note mentions a separate incident on US 54 near Dalhart where Vera was bruised and shaken in a car accident with an unspecified vehicle.
Raymond David Vera of Dalhart escapes unharmed after his car overturns in Dalhart. Police report the crash occurred near local streets and investigators are reviewing the scene for causes and injuries to others.
