Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower was admitted to Walter Reed General Hospital around midnight Saturday with acute gastroenteritis. The report notes his condition and hospital care as part of a broad wire service summary of national events.
In Our Town Amarillo Police investigate an early Sunday morning robbery where a service station attendant was held at gunpoint and about 67 dollars were taken. Over the weekend Caprock High School reported theft of 57 dollars and classroom equipment with roughly 250 dollars in damages.
AP reports two Green Beret officers and 22 South Vietnamese defenders died when a two hour mortar and small arms assault destroyed a Special Forces camp near the Laotian border in South Vietnam. Sgt J C Charles Irwin described the attack and said it began with a submachine gun burst and a grenade in the bunker doorway.
Ernest L Huff and Wanda Carver Huff of First State Bank of Mi ami face a 10 a m trial in 31st District Court on charges of bank theft and assault with intent to murder after a 30 minute gun battle following the March 3 holdup. The couple, captured by Gray and Hemphill county officers, fled in a stolen car then another vehicle and were treated for injuries before hospital transfer.
Washington hearings on the administration postal rate hike bill begin Tuesday. First class mail would rise to 6 cents, air mail to 9 cents, with a plan to cut a 1.2 billion dollar Post Office deficit by 825 million. Debate centers on subsidizing second and third class mail and the cost of superior first class service. Rep. Arnold Olsen leads the House panel, with hearings likely to last a month or more.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, age 76, was hospitalized at Walter Reed after an episode of vomiting and abdominal cramps. Doctors diagnosed acute gastroenteritis and said his condition is satisfactory. He was stricken at his Gettysburg farm while preparing to spend the summer, and his hospitalization marks a second Walter Reed visit within six months.

Two boys, Dennis W. Hill age five and Daren Gaither age three, suffocated after locking themselves in a vacant apartment refrigerator. A companion, Dannie G. Warren age three, survived in fair condition after quick mouth to mouth from emergency staff. Mrs. Mattie Garner, guardian, initiated the search when the children did not respond to calls. Tornadoes ripped through four states damaging aircraft and barns near Galesburg and Rockford while another twister hit near Piasa and Marengo. In Vietnam, coordinated mortar rocket strikes on four DMZ strongpoints wounded Americans as U S jets and a helicopter mission followed.
A late Sunday blaze in Sherman, Texas, started in the 95 year old Texas Hotel and swept a full city block. Firemen estimated damages could exceed one million dollars with many businesses destroyed or damaged. Two volunteers sustained minor injuries as the four story hotel collapsed walls. The fire, visible from 20 miles away, began about 6 30 p m and was controlled after more than three hours.
In Newcastle upon Tyne England a 17-year-old girl died and about 30 people were injured as a long-distance charity walk to raise funds for Oxford famine relief started in a park. A police spokesman said 8000 to 10000 gathered when someone tripped on a slope causing a pile-up. Ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals and seven remained in custody. The event aimed to raise roughly 16800 to fund a hospital in Nigeria and continued as planned.
California publisher Thomas W. Braden said he helped create a vast CIA operation to fund student, labor and cultural groups to counter Communist fronts in Europe. He claimed the covert effort aided Italian and French resistance to communism, while Walter Reuther acknowledged limited postwar government labor funding.
