A jury acquits Claude Vermillion after three hours of deliberation in a Claude bank robbery case. The defendant, supported by gray haired mother, rises as verdict is read in court in Panhandle to Central Texas proceedings.
A jury in the Forty-Seventh district court returned a not guilty verdict for W. S. Vermillion in the Claude First National Bank looting case dated January 21, 1926. Vermillion wept as his wife two children and his parents embraced him, ending a dramatic courtroom scene.
Three people were killed in Leflore County when a severe storm struck between Spiro and Panama and near Nubbinridge. A woman died in Nubbinridge and a man and boy perished as their home collapsed. Teoaut and Heavener lost power due to downed trees. multiple injuries and unverified deaths reported.
Amarillo officials favor a $7,000 plan from Southwestern Public Service to install 22 traffic signals with the utility supplying poles and lines and hanging labor. The city pays for signals and labor. W. C. Hawkins was authorized to advertise for bids on required materials. Overhead signals will be used.
The day in Washington covered farm relief talks with Republicans seeking White House input. The Senate committee backed tighter flour miller controls as Coolidge signed a 10 million dollar diplomatic service buildings bill. Posts rate restored to one cent was approved by leaders.
Corpus Christi saw the twenty fifth annual convention of Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs fifth district. A resolution urged the Texas legislature to pass a zoning act to protect health wealth safety morals and welfare. Delegates claimed 14000 district members support the measure. Georgetown won the 192x convention. Beeville 1928, Brownsville 1929. More than 200 delegates attended a luncheon and city tour.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled that rates on fresh meat and packing house products moving in straight and mixed carloads from Sioux Falls South Dakota and several Iowa cities to destinations in Oklahoma and Texas are unreasonable.
Robert Sanford Riley aged 51, famed as inventor of a mechanical stoker for power plants, died in Worcester Massachusetts. He served as chief engineer of Naval auxiliary vessels during the Boxer campaign in China and served on the Asiatic Station from 1900 to 1903.
Phillips was appointed as prohibition administrator in St. Louis today replacing previous duties. The appointment places him in Washington oversight with Mey Te Alroy noted in the official release.
The Inter State Commerce Commission took under advisement arguments over San Antonio and Aransas Pass rail trackage in Texas Rio Grande valley. Missouri Pacific opposed, citing ample existing facilities, while Southern Pacific backed expanded lines to Falfurrias and Edinburg Harlingen amid agricultural and citrus growth and increased Mexico trade.
The first session of Texas Education Commission convened in Fort Worth under R M Bledsoe of East Texas Teachers College as chairman. The initial focus covers county supervision of schools and county boards of education with finance and the state board of education to be discussed in later sessions.
Fort Worth May 7 Dean EE Davis of North Texas Agricultural College assailed Texas education as deplorably antiquated and undemocratic. He likened county superintendent elections to stockholder voting and warned a modern business would fail if forced to use the existing system. He called country schools unjust and unequal in educational opportunity.
General Conference will debate church unification amid disagreements on procedure. The convention floor faces a pivotal clash over how to handle the unification issue as delegates prepare for formal votes and policy decisions.
Secret meetings by opponents of unification are reported as a campaign to discontinue the committee. The Methodist Episcopal church south delegates plan to press the issue on the floor, with a committee majority favoring continuation of the unification process. CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO.
Fourteen guests fled the Ozark resort hotel in their night garments when fire destroyed the building in Salina Oklahoma. Volunteers blew a nearby warehouse to halt the blaze spreading to the business district. Loss estimated at $15000.
Senate leaders forecast passage of the railroad labor bill in nearly its House form. The debate focused on Curtis amendment to delegate final wage dispute authority to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Supporters argued for farmer and shipper protection, while opponents warned it would turn the ICC into a wage fixing body.
The city commission rejected a Negro applicant for a patrolman position after a Negro committee urged denial prior to filing. The would be officer had lived in Amarillo for ten years.
Lone Star Gas plans an 18 inch Panhandle to Wichita Falls gas line to supply 50,000,000 cubic feet daily to Dallas Fort Worth and other Texas cities. The project, costing about 5 million dollars, follows the Fort Worth and Denver railroad toward Memphis or Clarendon then north into the Panhandle. The line will connect with current Lone Star lines and may source gas directly from producers.
The federal grand jury indicted Harry M. Daugherty former United States attorney general Thomas W. Miller former alien property custodian and John T. King former Republican National Committee member Connecticut for conspiracy to defraud the government. The charges relate to transfer of 7,000 600 dollars of American Metals Company funds from U S government custody to Societe Suisse Pour Valeurs de Metaux a Swiss firm alleged to be German owned.
A British seamen strike prompted cancellation of the Cedric's next Liverpool sailing and the Minnetonka voyage from England, as reported in a cable to White Star line offices in New York.
In Managua May a U S customs official urged Washington to instruct the cruiser Cleveland to shelter Mrs W J Crampton wife of the local customs collector marooned in a house surrounded by revolutionary troops in El Bluff Nicaragua The British consul at Bluefields asked Britain to protect its subjects as El Bluff remains closed to cargo ships.
In a First Methodist Church address, W E Pussyfoot Johnson of the Anti Saloon League urged that America remain dry, claiming prohibition is written into the constitution and will endure. He recalled 7000 miles of travel through India England and Japan, noting broad support for the dry cause and urging continued resistance to modification of the Eighteenth Amendment.
The forecast for Amarillo and surrounding areas calls for generally fair conditions on Saturday. West Texas is expected to be sunny with little temperature change, while a central low in the Rocky Mountain region brings showers to central Texas and Louisiana northward.
