Sugar certificates available by mail or once weekly in person at Potter County Courthouse Amarillo Texas. Submit No 1 Ration Book for every person in the family. Each person gets 25 pounds for canning and preserving with berry season limit six pounds per person. Processing takes about five days. A large crowd formed at the courthouse prompting sheriff to restore order as lines stretched from the building’s south to north.
Civilian Defense chiefs announced a mass meeting for all district leaders at 8 tonight in the High School auditorium. Fred DeCoster, coordinator, urged about 1400 workers to attend as officials discuss plans for future war activities and show cards and colors supplied by Russell Stationery Co.
After a stop order halted work at the Cactus Ordnance Works in Dumas preparations were made to reassign about half the workforce. Major R. E. Smith and Clark F. Davis coordinated transfers with Illinois Smelting Company and the U S Unemployment office to place workers on other projects while pay continued for the stoppage day.

Michael Casselle, despite his small stature, subdued a burglar in a Brooklyn apartment. The intruder drew a pistol, and Casselle twisted the wrist to force the gun toward the robber, who died from a throat wound when the weapon fired. Police located another suspect fleeing on the roof.
Allied headquarters in Australia reports Japanese submarines have sunk four Allied ships and one American near Australia. Most crews rescued by naval units. Earlier, Japan began using submarines in force east of Australia. Allied bombers pounded Japanese bases on Dutch New Guinea destroying nine float planes.
A light plane from Love Field crashed and burned on the Wichita Falls highway three miles northwest of Bowie. The pilot died. Army officers from Love Field were en route to investigate the crash.
Allied forces begin decisive offensive in Tunisia as Red Air forces bomb enemy troop concentrations. General Devers assumes command of European operations while Japan presses new drive on China’s central rice bowl.
Lieut. Gen. Jacob L. Devers, armored warfare expert, is named to command American troops in the European theater, succeeding the late Lieut. Gen. Frank M. Andrews who died in Iceland. Stimson praises Andrews and endorses Devers, stressing readiness for invasion and coordinated combined operations across arms.
