Officials say the airship starts its journey with an onboard crew and could fly over London, marking a milestone in aerial travel. The event features anticipation from officials and city observers about the craft’s progress and route.
The 813 foot German airship Hindenburg, commanded by Dr. Hugo Eckener, left Friedrichshafen for its first North Atlantic crossing with 51 passengers and 56 crew. It carried 60 tons of fuel oil, 20 sacks of mail over 2,000 pounds, and 3,300 pounds of freight, routing via Holland and England toward Lakehurst New Jersey. Among the passengers are 15 Americans including three women.
Brigands hold parts of the Ethiopian capital as Italian troops deter a second attack on the American legation. Three Ethiopians die, natives and whites reoccupy the legation, and Marshal Badoglio enters the city after marching with Italian forces. Unrest causes widespread casualties.
The Bank of France raised its discount rate to 6 percent from 5 percent as foreign exchange pressures on the franc mount. Officials expect possible devaluation by a coming Leftist government, while Finance Minister Regnier denies any devaluation. About $25 million in gold ships depart for New York to stem the outflow.
Fred Hunter, an associate of Alvin Karpis, faced arraignment in New Orleans on charges of harboring and concealing. Bond was set at $200,000. Hunter waived preliminary hearing and was remanded to federal jail pending grand jury action.

Hope testified detailing a plot involving venomous snakes and a $21400 life insurance. District Attorney Baron Fitts urged indictments on both men as deserving gallows penalty.
Obstacles to the Conchas flood control project in New Mexico eased as the House approved a Senate item in the War Department supply bill. The $3.5 million for 1937 construction was inserted by the Senate and adopted with the conference report. Representative John J. Dempsey said the action should assure continuation despite past opposition.

In San Quentin Prison on May 6, convict Frank Dangne, a Filipino murder inmate, stabbed 15 fellow prisoners with a fence wire weapon in the big yard before being felled by a guard’s rifle. He died from hip and chest wounds. Three victims, including an older Black man and a Chinese inmate, were hospitalized. others were not seriously hurt. Guard Charles Rexroad patrolled as the incident unfolded.
Weather summary reports scattered clouds over the Panhandle with no rainfall. Regions that had recent rain showed potential for more moisture but clouds produced none. Forecaster H. T. Collman noted little chance of moisture before Sunday. Temperatures ranged 64 to 89 degrees yesterday.

Deaf Smith County prepares a weekend centennial celebration and home-coming in Hereford with events from 9:30 a.m. Friday to near milking time Saturday. Activities include school programs, band concerts, a historical parade, fiddling contest, chuck wagon dinner, speeches by Bishop F E Seaman of Amarillo, and an all-day program honoring early residents. The grand parade starts at 11:30 a.m. and runs to 12:30 p.m.
The Associated Press reports 63 unpledged delegates added to the Republican convention, after a dispute between uninstructed delegation supporters and a pro-Landon California slate and a Connecticut convention. Landon cites satisfaction with the result as California’s 44 delegates appear bound to Cleveland. South Dakota late returns show 42,327 for an uninstructed slate.
John Cary a 71 year old Houston man plunged from the Morgan's Point ferry landing into the Houston ship channel. He surfaced shouting that his brakes failed and swam to safety after his car sank 20 feet to the bottom. Cary had previously survived a rollover crash last year with no injuries.
Egypt’s 16 year old King Parouk arrives in Alexandria from London en route to Cairo for his first visit as sovereign. British warships in the harbor fly flags of honor while thousands of Egyptians line the streets to greet the new king as he disembarks with naval escorts.
The United States and France signed a reciprocal trade agreement at the State Department. Secretary Hull and Ambassador Andre de Laboulaye witnessed the pact effective June 15 and lasting until July 1, 1937 with six months notice for termination. Details will be public May 13. The accord promises expanded trade for products of mutual interest and broad most favored nation treatment, with duty concessions and quota increases on both sides.
Oklahoma City May 6 by unanimous vote the Oklahoma Council of Democratic Women passed a resolution to President Roosevelt requesting commute of death sentence for Arthur Gooch the first person sentenced to hang under the Lindbergh kidnapping law.
Pocatello Idaho May 6 Captain L M Applegate CCC engineer proposes speed up Old Faithful to reduce park traffic. He suggests using a nearby geyser as a primer at 15 minute intervals to trigger steam displays four times an hour.
Hugh Nugent Fitzgerald longtime Texas newspaperman and chief editorial writer for Marsh Fentress papers died at 73 after a weeklong illness. Funeral services are set at his residence with Rev. William Blakeslee. burial in Dallas. Gov Allred ordered state flags lowered to half staff in his memory.
King Vidor, noted director, is confined to his Gallup hotel with a sore throat while his Texas Ranger unit shoots on location. He is the second cast member to fall ill, following Fred MacMurray who is hospitalized after an attack of quinsy. Work on Vidor’s unit is suspended, while other units continue Indian scene filming under Otho Lovering.
