A raid by Deputy Sheriffs Wood and Monzingo and Federal Prohibition officer Carl Gordon at Jesse Leach's Northern county home confiscated a nearly twenty five gallon still without a coil. Ten barrels of corn and rye mash were seized. a sample ignited on contact with a flame. Leach is out on bond.
President Harding accepted the allied supreme council invitation for U S representation at future allied conferences. George Harvey will sit as U S president's representative in the supreme council, with the Paris ambassadors conference and reparations commission observers. Roland Royden and the French ambassador will attend unofficially.
A train derailment left nine injured as crew and passengers from Oklahoma, Texas, and Denison were treated. Injured include Jack Hollman expressman Muskogee with internal injuries and E C Mahone Fort Worth cattle buyer with internal injuries. Some patients were expected to recover while others were deemed non-recoverable by physicians.
Col Miller sues to recover a large oil land block in Carson County alleging a March 9 1918 lease and a bank delivery condition were not honored. The petition cites drilling begun with an approved rig and geologist reports favorable to the location, but the bank refused lease delivery and halted development. Other named parties face allegations of bad faith and interference.
Saturday shows partly cloudy skies and cooler air across the Panhandle. Sunday brings more cloud cover with cooler conditions in the north portion. Humidity and temperatures vary, with dry readings around noon and cooler wet readings later.
In Berlin on May 6 the Reichstag heard Chancellor Fehrenbach say a new German cabinet will decide on the Allied reparations terms after the British text reached Berlin. He accused the Allies of ignoring German warnings linked to Polish actions in Upper Silesia and alleged Polish officers aided Adalbert Korfanty. He warned Reichswehr could be sent to the revolt area if needed, as communists and independents pushed for debate.
Gulf Company eyeing pipeline to railroad as Humble and Gulf drill near Carson acreage. Rumor of Humble oil show persists without confirmation. Plans foreseen include more tanks, possible additional wells, equipment moves, and shared insights from nearby fields Miller Smith-Capers. Sinclair interest also discussed as Gulf discoveries near Canadian river influence activity.
A lighted cigarette or similar object set a barrel of dry straw on the second floor of the Nunn building at Fifth and Polk Friday night. The blaze drew a large crowd, but no damage occurred as firefighters rolled the barrel downstairs and kept bystanders from the stairs.
Special to The News reports T C Horne, a prominent Carlsbad merchant, knocked down by a runaway horse at noon Thursday. He suffered a broken right wrist and ankle and other injuries.
On May 6 a human skeleton was found by A B Schultz while digging on his dairy farm on the eastern outskirts of Hereford. The skull is small with high cheek bones and slanting forehead. The bones show long burial, no clothing or artifacts found, leading Schultz to suspect an Indian origin. The skull and jaw are on display at The Branch office while investigations continue to determine if prehistoric or native origin.
In Hereford Texas on May 6 Sheriff Purcell seized $100 from a circus concession dispute. He handed the money to Homer Wilkinson for the Hereford Sanitarium stockholders noting the funds would be disinfected and used for sanitarium purposes. Wilkinson thanked the sheriff on behalf of stockholders.
The second annual banquet of the Amarillo Builders' Exchange at the Harvey House Friday night drew strong interest and featured speeches on home building finance cooperation and the city’s future role. Speakers includd Albert Randall James Gulekie Joe L Pope R H Nichols A S Stinnet and Toastmaster Fred Rowe with musical numbers by Farwell's Novelty Orchestra and a reading by Dana Harmon.
May 6 report from Port Arthur Texas says the Marine Workers strike keeps vessels tied up with all engineers gone from ships. No ships depart as refiners feel the impact from the stoppage and local labor action.
