A Santa Rosa couple, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Quarles, died when their car collided with a truck on U.S. 66, 22 miles west of Santa Rosa. State police said Quarles fell asleep at the wheel. the truck driver Homer Oesch was uninjured. The death toll in New Mexico for 1953 reaches 110.
Intelligence reports in Formosa say a Chinese Communist general with Russian advisers has taken command of Vietminh forces in Indochina. Claims include 10,000 Chinese troops joining rebels and 100,000 Chinese veterans moving south, with an international air force ready to intervene. The reports cite Li Lien-Po and Gen. Tu Yu Kwang as leaders, though identities are disputed and timing unclear.
The agency said 65 Chinese Communist air force technicians left Canton on April 24 bound for Indochina to prepare for air intervention. It reported Gen Kung Chang Lin, commander of CCP air force in Central and South China, led a mid April conference on air support for Ho Chi Minh.
The Senate voted 56 to 35 to pass an Eisenhower backed bill to recognize state ownership of submerged coastal oil lands, sending the measure to the House after 27 days of debate. Opponents warned of a federal property giveaway, while supporters hailed a long standing claim.

A temporary order blocking Santa Fe Railway from forming a closed shop agreement was issued by Judge E C Nelson in Amarillo in a suit by 14 Santa Fe employees. The case tests the Tevac Right to Work law and is linked to 966 workers protesting union shop provisions. The order lasts until May 14 with a hearing to decide permanence.
At Panmunjom on May 6 the Communists angrily rejected an Allied proposal to free Korean war prisoners and allow them to choose settlements. Lt. Gen. William K. Harrison Jr. said progress was zero after the one hour and 46 minute recess and the rejection followed a tense discussion.

Spearman May 5 A 15 year old boy died after being dragged by a roped horse in a pasture near his home. John Ray Crain son of Mr and Mrs O J Crain was pronounced dead on arrival at Sanford Hospital at 6 PM. He was found fatally injured about 50 minutes earlier after entangling in the rope and being dragged. The accident occurred on the family farm three miles south of Waka. Crain a Spearman High School student and member of Waka Brethren Church is survived by his parents two brothers Karen and Glen Dale and two sisters Mary Alice and Mrs Reta Pettigrew. Burial will be in Ochil tree Cemetery with funeral arrangements incomplete.
Maj. Christopher Draper known as Mad Major, 61, flies a rented World War II Auster under 12 Thames bridges in a dramatic swan song. He faces possible fines or prison and says he will never fly again, while police invite him for discussion.
Becky Lynn Powell, a girl born at 3 57 PM yesterday at Northwest Texas Hospital, weighs 6 pounds 3 ounces. She joins parents Mr and Mrs Putt Powell of 4316 Travis and older brother David, with dad noting she will cheerlead and support the baseball and football teams.
