Ralph Nader told UPI and testified before the House Commerce Committee that Rolls-Royce latches are poor and doors can open in a 20 mph crash. He called the luxury car the industry’s safety failure and cited Derwyn Severy of UCLA in London remarks. The Rolls-Royce firm declined comment as Nader warned of broader automotive safety issues.
In Alabama the 1965 Voting Rights Act enfranchised Black voters who so far failed to block Lurleen Wallace from the Democratic nomination for governor, as she defeated Richmond M. Flowers by over 200,000 votes. The turnout signals a potential Wallace administration lasting through 1975 if she wins in November.
Brig. Gen. William T. Bradley will take charge of the Army Corps of Engineers southwestern division June 1, succeeding Brig. Gen. Richard H. Free. Bradley, 49, has served with the Seventh Army in Europe and in the Southwest Pacific and Korea. Free has led the division since July 1964 and will become deputy director of research and development with the Army Materiel Command in Washington. The division covers Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana.
Lurleen Wallace’s landslide win in Alabama’s Democratic primary draws sharp criticism from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and integration advocates who call it a protest vote against progress. Attorneys Daru and others pledge legal challenges, arguing the nomination violates succession law and mocks constitutional limits.
Monsoon rains forced a one day pause in U S Air Force bombing against North Viet Nam as clouds dropped to 500 feet. Navy missions were cut to eight by the weather, while B52 strikes continued against Viet Cong targets in War Zone C with support for the 1st Infantry Division sweep along the Cambodian border.
Tom Horton a Tucumcari rancher celebrated his 84th birthday by riding a 40 mile mail route atop a chestnut sorrel Quarter Horse. He plans to ride into town that afternoon despite family objections and says he works every day. His son T J joined at noon for a lunch break at Chappell Spade Ranch. Horton is described as a man of strong will and a mind of his own.
The Commerce Department and the Pennsylvania Railroad sign the first contract to operate 50 self propelled electric cars on a three year $90 million program. Tests will run from New York to Washington with fares lower than existing and speeds up to 110 mph, expanding toward 150 mph by 1970. The project aims to gauge consumer response and could extend to West Coast routes if successful. The government will spend $9.6 million with additional railroad investments. a $950,000 contract funds four test cars for delivery this summer to run on a 21 mile New Jersey test corridor.
Torrential rain drenched the Lower Rio Grande Valley bringing 4.5 inches to Brownsville 3 inches to McAllen and 3 inches to Bayview near Port Isabel. The weather bureau warned more rain through Thursday while floods were minimal and crops benefited though idle labor hurt the local economy.
An auction at Hudson Bay Fur Sales in New York sold 450 black willow mink pelts for a total of about 44 thousand dollars. B H Hessel bought the 40 pelts at 1100 each for Nei man Marcus of Dallas, with other pelts fetching 430 each and an average around 360. The rare color, bred by John Adkins of Colaville Utah, first appeared in 1957 and helped drive estimates above 50 thousand including labor and markup. Bonnie V. Lloyd and Los Angele Bailey attended as Utah pageant reps.
