A blazing 400 Jefferson yard destroyed the finish lumber shed and the Mark Clemmer Lumber Company office in Amarillo. The fire spread toward three nearby houses, damaged cars, and tainted Furr Food bakery goods. Fire crews from six trucks fought the wind-driven blaze, saving records though the office ledgers were scorched.
In Tucumcari on May 4, Winnie Burnham Gilmore was charged with murder of her 11 month old son Paul Michael Honeycutt. Sheriff Bert Jennings and deputies found the child dead in a Grover apartment. Gilmore was taken to the Las Vegas state hospital for the insane after the charge. Welfare board prepared papers for continued action.
Spellers gather tomorrow at 2 PM in Amarillo High School Auditorium for the News Globe Spelling Bee to select county champions who will spell until one winner advances to the National Bee in Washington. Consolation cash prizes and plaques awarded. final climax at 3 30 PM broadcast by KGNC.
A Panhandle dust storm and twister threat swept across Perryton Clovis and McLean amid strong winds of 40 to 45 mph. Amarillo reported minor damage as electric service flickered and signs toppled while visibility dropped to a quarter mile in several towns. The front brought scattered showers and wind shift from west to north as a low pressure system moved in.

Names include Talma L Smith Ronald Davis J Blake Timmons Ben Guill Bill Pickel Woodrow Montgomery T Burk H J Rice Walter Rogers LeRoy Lamaster Altavene Clark. Most seek Democratic nomination ahead of November election.
A pictorial CAA safety demonstration highlighted the opening session of the Texas Flying Farmers convention at the Herting Hotel. Fort Worth officials Paul Lanman and H J Townsend led with local bureau staff C E Brown and J D Donahoe. The display showed radio use and weather handling for pilots with emphasis on radios. A film titled Live and Learn closed the day’s activities as winds limited turnout.

Edith Land Cator known as Grandma Cator, 86, died after a stroke at the Palo Duro Creek family home. Widow of James H. Cator, early Hansford County judge and buffalo hunter born in Leeds England, she arrived in 1887 and helped pioneer the Texas Panhandle. Funeral 2:30 PM Saturday at First Methodist Church with burial in Grover Cemetery.
Chrysler's 9000 striking CIO United Auto Workers will return to work Monday ending a 100 day strike. Settlement arrived amid bitterness with both sides exchanging sharp remarks after the contract signing.
Tornadic dust laden winds struck Perryton and nearby towns in the Panhandle last night injuring 13 people and causing extensive property damage. Three seriously hurt at Perryton Hospital, nine with lesser injuries, one treated and released.
A tornado struck the northwestern Oklahoma town of Fort Supply around 10 PM, damaging several homes and businesses. An hour after the twister there were no known injuries reported.
President Truman said a shooting war with Russia is distant and the world situation is improving. He spoke at a news conference defending a United Nations with Russia included, and pledged U S support for the UN as long as he is President, noting the UN is working well in most cases.
