Proposed Army Recruits Bonus Plan Bids 1000 for Two Years

Washington AP May 4 Representative Allen of Illinois proposed a volunteer bonus plan to build up the armed forces. Enlistees for two years would receive 1000 dollars, three years 1500 dollars, plus GI Bill benefits. He estimated annual cost at 350 million dollars plus training and equipment. Senate critics warned it could split the nation. A draft bill remains under review as Congress weighs military manpower options.

Rail Talks Flop Threatens Federal Seizure of Railroads

Chicago May 47 Federal seizure of the nation's railroads looms after mediation failed to avert a strike slated for May 1. Frank Douglass, chair of the National Railway Mediation Board, pushed direct talks between unions and carriers as unions near a 90 percent representation in bargaining while a Presidential fact finding panel had recommended 14 percent as a wage basis for settlement.

Taft supporters edge Stassen in 13 of 23 Ohio delegate contests as returns from 1 198 of 9 385 polls favor Taft with 30 of 53 votes assured on first ballot. Bricker Herbert Brown lead Taft at large delegates while Lausche leads Democratic governor race. Alabama Florida Indiana votes also show splits over Truman or civil rights. Potter County Republicans name nine delegates to state meet

About 75 people met in the 10th District courtroom to elect nine delegates and nine alternates to the Texas state convention in Corpus Christi on May 25. Delegates include Mrs. H. E Exum George I. Shannon J. R. Lyons C Bascom Slemp III Herold E. Brady and others. The group voted to support electors pledged to Democratic nominees and approved resolutions on unemployment, taxes on natural resources, and unity with the state organization. Lyons was made permanent chairman.

Amarillo business travelers rode the Santa Fe eight coach train from Amarillo to Tulia Plainview and other towns on a three day goodwill trip to view irrigated fields and meet local leaders. Canadian Dam Survey Slated

Secretary of the Interior Julius A. Krug told Rep. Eugene Worley he would ask the Reclamation Bureau regional office to survey the Canadian River and assess the need for a dam. Weather outlook for Amarillo and West Texas region

Partly cloudy conditions persist through Wednesday and Thursday with little temperature change. Taylor Scolded Fined and Suspended Term in Disorder Case

Idaho Senator Glen Taylor was convicted of disorderly conduct in Birmingham on May 4. Judge Oliver Hall fined him 50 dollars and costs, sentenced him to 180 days in jail with the sentence suspended, and warned that the case touched civil rights and would be reviewed on appeal. The proceedings cited outside influences and racial issues during the campaign.
