Gene Lusk of Carlsbad held a strong lead over former Gov. John Burroughs as about 45 percent of the vote was counted. Lusk led by roughly 12,000 votes with late tabulations favoring him, aided by strong showings in Los Alamos and Albuquerque Valley precincts. Burroughs lacked northern county strength, while Republican rivals Cargo and Hawley battled for the GOP nomination.
The House Armed Services Committee added 931.1 million dollars to the 1967 military procurement request. Excludes about 420 million for a 3.2 percent pay raise. Total authorization, excluding the pay raise, reaches 17.858 billion. Funds cover two nonrequested nuclear frigates, Nike X antimissile, a manned orbiting space lab, and an advanced manned aircraft.
Washington AP Texans urged House Appropriations subcommittee to provide about 5 million for flood control works in the Trinity River Basin and 200 thousand for a restudy of navigation aspects. Amon Carter Jr. and John Stemmons led the delegation, citing recent Dallas Fort Worth floods. B W Reynolds opposed the barge canal but supported restudy funds. Sabine Neches group sought Southeast Texas funds and an extra 100 thousand for design and planning.
Former governor Ray mond Gary tops the Democratic gubernatorial field as results roll in. With about half of 3065 precincts reporting Tulsa County Atty. David Hall and Oklahoma City attorney Preston Moore contend for the No. 2 runoff. In the Republican side, Dewey Bart lett of Tulsa County leads over John N. Happy Camp as Tulsa returns come in.
U S ambassador to South Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge and his wife Emily arrived in Boston for a short home visit. Lodge declined to say how long he would stay, and greeted by his sons George and Harry and Harry’s wife Elenita. A Rome stop included a 40 minute audience with Pope Paul VI.
Senate investigators Tuesday released a confidential survey of four major Army divisions in the United States and found they were unprepared for combat and short of officers, men, and equipment. The report notes divisions are drained of manpower and weapons.
The report shows thousands of recruits stalled in training as divisions degrade into training units and will not be ready for active duty for months. Sen. John Stennis warns that even a small country can tie down forces, criticizing Johnson for not calling up Reserve components and questioning McNamara’s claim that all 16 Army divisions are fully ready.
Alabama primary results show Mrs. George C. Wallace winning the Democratic nomination by a wide margin avoiding a runoff. With 1,319 of 3,654 boxes counted, she led over Richmond Flowers and others, while across races in Alabama and nearby states, party leaders reported mixed advances and pending tallies. U S Senator Sparkman won easily, and in Ohio, Robert Taft Jr led a Republican contest as James A Rhodes secured renomination. The Florida race featured Scott Kelly and Hay Burns in a runoff fight amid regional vote totals and war prisoner talks.
In Prague secret talks between the American Red Cross and Viet Cong representatives failed to move the Communists on U S prisoners of war held in North Viet Nam. Highly authoritative sources said the meeting produced no results and indicated the Viet Cong have shown no readiness to follow international rules for POWs.
President Johnson will attend the funeral of Senator Pat McNamara of Michigan in Detroit. McNamara died Saturday at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a stroke. A Requiem Mass is planned at Holy Name Church. Johnson will depart Washington at 10 50 a.m. and return about 4 p.m.
A U S infantry battalion crossed the Cai Bao River in war zone G near the Cambodian border, triggering a heavy crossfire and light American casualties. Commanders stated no Saigon authority was needed for the action, while Cambodia and China warned of retaliation and support.
Despite trailing the front-runners by over 30 000 votes John High said he would be in the runoff after a tight race. Unofficial results from 1337 of 2561 precincts show Burns leading with 198664 votes and Kelly close behind at 193700. High stood at 162439 with only 30 Dade County precincts reporting. In Alabama both black and white voters contributed to a large turnout as federal poll watchers monitored seven counties following the new 1965 voting rights law.
Greek engineer Spyridon Georgakis, 36, employed at a NATO rocket base under construction in Canea Crete, was arrested on charges of passing military secrets to Soviet Embassy officials in Athens. Placed under surveillance six months ago, he awaits trial and the timing of the arrest was not disclosed.
