The 19 year old Amarillo girl Carolyn Sue Townsend was killed when struck by an eastbound Rock Island freight train near Wolflin and Plains Boulevard. Investigators said she stepped onto the track after dropping her purse as the train, traveling 42 miles per hour, approached.
Houston AP reports astronauts L Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad Jr will seek 12 land targets during the third manned Gemini flight. A $67,295 contract to build the targets was awarded to H B Zachry of San Antonio by the Navy Bureau of Yards and Docks in New Orleans.
Advance elements of a fresh 3,500 man US Army Airborne force reach Saigon as Marines mount their largest patrols yet against the Viet Cong. The new force joins 10,000 American combat troops in country and supports two key bases Bien Hoa and Vung Tau near Saigon. Navy jets hit North Vietnam’s rail link south of the border.
UPI reports Marines at the Da Nang air base protest a safety order from Brig. Gen. Frederick J. Karch’s Ninth Marine Brigade restricting rounds in chambers. The rule follows two accidental discharges that killed two Leathernecks, though Karch says loaded weapons are allowed without a chambered round.
A major quake hit San Salvador and surrounding towns at 4 02 p m local time shaking the capital and outlying areas. Reports cite 43 dead and about 300 injured with higher counts possible as damage spreads to Ilopango and towns like Mexicanos.
