In Hutchinson County many schools sent spellers to the county Bee with Betty Banks runner up to Edwin Oliver of Borger Junior High. Civil Aeronautics Administration officials urged Amarillo to design the new western style terminal with generous waiting room space central location and field side dining. They advised dispersing baggage handling and consolidating ticket offices while avoiding a top mounted control tower to fit the architecture.

Stanley Blackburn and David Brown announced that Amarillo stores will close all day May 30 for Memorial Day. Blackburn chairs the chamber commerce retail committee, Brown and Ben Solnick co-chair the Downtown Merchants Store Closing Committee. The group agreed last year to observe one commemorative holiday and the public and merchants approve.
About 400 Texas Flying Farmers convene in Amarillo with registration at Tradewind Airport from 1 to 6 pm. Events include a business session at the Herring Hotel, a banquet and square dance, a Panhandle tour with barbecue at Boys Ranch, and an optional Carlsbad Caverns trip.

A grassland blaze northwest of Amarillo burned part of Bush Estate pastureland yesterday afternoon. Fire trucks from Amarillo responded, reaching control by 5 o'clock after starting around 3:30. The fire is believed to have started along the Fort Worth &.
Santa Fe May 3 Government Mabry said approval of the Canadian River compact bill places the Amarillo reclamation project in the negotiable stage. New Mexico demanded no construction until a compact is negotiated and no action contrary to compact terms. President Truman signed the bill enabling a federal rep to join the commission and draft the compact.
The Texas Company announced a price hike of one-fourth cent per gallon on tank car fuel and one-half cent per gallon on tank wagon fuel. Dallas district agent I G Morgan said all outlets in Texas east of the Pecos River are informed the increase takes effect at 7 AM tomorrow, with retailers possibly choosing to absorb or pass the rise to customers.
In Goldthwaite Texas a man with a double barrel shotgun harangued a crowd at a hardware store entrance for 30 to 45 minutes before firing. Three bystanders were wounded Luther Booker 65 Robert Cockrum 55 and E T Fairman 60. Deputy Clyde Cockrum felled the shooter Tommy Fuller 45 and stopped the attack.
Jack Corn of Fort Worth studies cloud formations and southeast winds to bring rain to the Panhandle. He tracks cloud movement from Amarillo area and watches southwest for other favorable formations. He notes clouds west of Amarillo have moved away and eastern clouds have not arrived yet. He stayed on the ground yesterday and hopes southeast clouds reach the area in a day or two.
