In Cleburne Texas Miss Bert Luttrell 24 is dead and Thurman Hilton 19 is in serious condition after a collision between Holton driven automobile and a Santa Fe freight train at a crossing last night. The car carrying Hilton and three other persons was struck and pushed into another car occupied by Miss Luttrell and five other teachers. The remaining occupants escaped with minor injuries.

Washington May 8 Republicans stood by the Mellon proposal for reducing maximum surtax rates as Democrats attacked in the Senate fight over income tax cuts in the revenue bill. A Republican spokesman called the battle a losing one as senators noted much of the plan had already been repudiated. The debate centered on lowering the top surtax from fifty to twenty six percent and the House Longworth compromise. Only a few senators were on the floor as sessions continued.
