Judge Marvin Jones of Amarillo rules in favor of Mississippi in a boundary dispute with Louisiana. The decision highlights interstate territorial questions and impacts regional legal precedents across neighboring states.
U S air and ground forces hit Communist supply lines in North and South Vietnam and destroyed two SAM sites with precision. Navy pilots faced a skyward weapon mishap, but Lt Richard Mansfield survived after a rescue, dangling 30 feet below a helicopter. The 1st Infantry Division swept war zone C near the Cambodian border, burning warehouses and facilities while heavy clashes occurred across the border.
London AP reports a Labour lawmaker sought an emergency Commons debate on an African bid to launch a Rhodesia murder campaign. Reginald Paget claimed Africans trained in Red China crossed from Zambia and fought Rhodesian forces near Sinoia, leaving seven dead in a bush battle with police and air force helicopters.
Two U S pilots were saved after their jets were downed near the Laos North Viet Nam border. Lt Richard Mansfield of Brattleboro Vermont dangled from a jammed helicopter hoist before being lowered into the water and picked up by a destroyer. Capt James M Ingalls of Palo Alto California parachuted into rugged terrain and avoided mounting fire while helicopters attempted multiple pickups until a dawn plan.
Galveston police reported the beaches free of rowdy youths after a weekend of unrest. More than 300 were jailed and dozens hospitalized with injuries. Two shootings occurred with unclear ties to beach incidents. Fines may total about 5000 dollars, covering overtime and costs, while traffic fines add up to 413. About 25,000 youngsters visited the beaches as police noted drinking and bottle throwing at times.
Liberal Kansas police report the week long search for Terri Thornton’s kidnapper ended with the arrest of a couple in Dodge City. Mrs Goldie J Dunn 35 and Harold Charles Dunn 38 face third degree kidnapping and accessory charges respectively. The girl was abducted from Liberal and later led officers to a trailer camp where she had been held. The suspects are to be returned to Liberal for arraignment.
Voters in Florida Indiana Ohio New Mexico Oklahoma and Alabama cast ballots in the first round of 1966 primaries. National focus centers on George Wallace in Alabama where his wife Lurleen Wallace is running against nine challengers as a record turnout is expected and implications for future governance loom.
Gardner Ackley, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, warned businessmen in Washington that further price and profit rises could trigger a wage price spiral and a speculative boom followed by a bust. He urged all to pause and listen during a speech to the U S Chamber of Commerce.
A thunderstorm system that unleashed the worst floods in Dallas history moved out of Texas, dropping 13.22 inches of rain in 10 days and causing at least 19 deaths. The Trinity River crested at 40.6 feet, then fell as rain eased.
Amarillo jury deliberated 32 hours before finding Thomas Clark Hicks Jr guilty of possessing marijuana. Judge Gene Jordan placed him on five years probation and Hicks filed a notice of appeal. The trial featured a home movie of the Morgan home raid showing the marijuana cache and implicating Hicks as helping process the drugs. An ex-convict turned state’s evidence identified Hicks among others in the marijuana operation. See election and chemist on page 2.
President Johnson jokes about misquote after NYT front page claimed his girl friend dumped him in front of wounded Viet Nam veterans at the White House. Courtenay Valenti replied Prez and then asked for Pat, prompting light humor about beagle puppies.
