Rain totals ranged from 0.12 to 1.0 inch, with olton reporting 0.50 inch by 9:30 p.m. Thunder and hail accompanied the rain in several towns.
A rezoning application for a 25.8 acre unplatted tract north of Wolflin to allow a shopping center and parking was tabled by the Planning and Zoning Commission after neighborhood protests. The owners are Virginia H. Gooch and Mrs Elberta G. Fitz of Louisville Kentucky. A New York firm prepared the center plans.
Action on a 100 million dollar tax bill stalled as the Texas Senate shifts the measure to a subcommittee. Senate State Affairs Chair Dorsey Hardeman announced amendments would go forward without prior committee action. Senator Ottis Lock, sponsoring the bill, acknowledged coercion but pressed for possible new funds to maintain minimum services.
G. T. Floyd 19 of Stockdale Texas was killed in a crash at N E 8th and Lincoln about 12 15 a m today. Injured was Billy Don Line 21 of Plainview who received treatment for a head injury at St Anthony s hospital. Line was driving a new model car west on 8th when it struck another auto, jumped a curb, and crashed into the Western Motel cabin. Both men arrived in San Francisco May 1 from Korea with the 1st Marine Division. They were en route to Camp Lejeune May 14. Line is the son of Arthur Line of Plainview. This is Amarillo s second traffic death this year.
Red Cross and civil defense leaders mapped a mock evacuation from Dallas and Fort Worth to Amarillo for 20000 refugees. The plan covers registration housing and feeding with 10 percent possibly needing hospitalization. Volunteers will assist in registration information and housing assignments.

William Faulkner wins his first Pulitzer Prize in literature for A Fable. Tennessee Williams earns his second Pulitzer drama award for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Both had prior prizes. Williams previously won for A Streetcar Named Desire.

The Texas House adopted a memorial resolution for David Rasco Amarillo Daily News and Globe Times managing editor who died last week A page was set aside in the House Journal and the body adjourned in respect The resolution was offered by Reps J Edgar Wilson and Bill Andis of Amarillo A similar tribute was prepared in the Senate by Sen Grady Hazlewood of Amarillo
President Eisenhower addressed about 250 attendees at the Mayflower Hotel dinner briefing governors on international and domestic issues. He called the annual gathering a salutary event and said it helps bring the administration closer to the people of the states.
