The Amarillo Canyon Expressway aims to reduce congestion, improve safety, and cut driving costs and time. It will divert through traffic from local streets, enable faster suburban to business district travel, and lower accident rates. Expected benefits include one third to one half travel time on the new route and substantial gas savings.

A PA twin engine plane carrying Gov Allan Shivers made a forced landing ten miles north of Waco after an engine failed. The craft returned to land on one engine. Shivers, bound for Cleburne to speak, traveled on to his destination in a highway patrol car.
Isaac Burton Tigrett, founder of a Tennessee line that grew into the Gulf Mobile and Ohio Railroad, died in Jackson tonight after a heart attack. He was 74 and was known as the dean of American railroad executives.

Lumpkin, an Amarillo attorney and first baby born to Amarillo parents in St. Anthony's Hospital, was elected president of the Baby Alumna Association.
