Vice President Richard M. Nixon announced a non compulsory federal medical program for the aged to Congress next week. He urged a plan allowing all over 65 who want insurance to obtain it with federal subsidies, while not forcing anyone to buy it. He opposed using Social Security funds to back the plan, says the Democratic approach is not workable if it is compulsory.
The Associated Press reports May Day celebrations across major cities. In Moscow, Tokyo, Havana, Peiping, and Budapest crowds marked the holiday with parades and rallies. Emblems included posters of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. police estimated 210,000 at Meiji shrine in Tokyo. Main themes called for disarmament, shorter work weeks, higher wages, and restored relations with Peiping.
Caryl Chessman entered a prison waiting cell beside San Quentin's gas chamber for an all night vigil ahead of a scheduled 10 a.m. death date. California Supreme Court justices will meet to rule on his stay petition, with clemency repeatedly denied by a 4-3 vote. His attorney says a federal filing will follow if the state court denies. Governor Brown rejected further appeals.
Weather notes show Amarillo with sun on several days in 1960 and 3 pm readings. Partial entries list cities including Houston Dallas Okla and unclear conditions with cloudy and clear reports.
In Valdosta Georgia a hobo stepfather Howard Thomas and his wife Elizabeth Thomas face up to a year in prison for abandoning two young sons, Tommy age four and Johnny age two, found near Hahira after being left in a briar patch. Police but the couple were arrested near Albany and brought to court as the boys identified them. The mother cried, the stepfather claimed poverty, and authorities prepared to hear details in a case likened to Hansel and Gretel.

A crowded election week approaches with primaries across Alabama Florida Indiana Ohio and Texas. Kennedy faces Humphrey in West Virginia while Nixon lines up votes in Ohio and DC. Delegates to both parties conventions will be chosen amid looming civil rights debates and an Eisenhower veto threat.
One car accident on US 60 in Texico early today left Raymond Patterson dead and four others injured including Bobby Peace and his wife Wanda. Peace seriously hurt with ribs and possible internal injuries. Wanda in critical condition with head injuries. V. C. Vinson and wife of Muleshoe also serious with broken leg and broken ribs. NM State Policeman Bill Bullock investigated. car, a 1960 model, skidded into a yard and struck an elm. Patterson died en route to Clovis Memorial Hospital.
United States Weather Bureau forecast shows Amarillo and vicinity partly cloudy and mild today and Tuesday with highs 60s to 70s, New Mexico mostly fair in the west and partly cloudy with afternoon showers and thunderstorms elsewhere, cooler to warmer conditions across the region, with sunrise at 5 56 am and sunset at 7 33 pm.
Absentee voting ends at midnight Tuesday May 3 for next Saturday's Democratic primary. Ballots postmarked by the deadline will be counted. Mailings go to out-of-county addresses except for illness cases, which go to home address with a doctor certificate and poll tax receipt or exemption.

In West Berlin a record crowd of over 750,000 demanded that Western allies resist Soviet pressure and stay. The May Day rally became a plebiscite against making West Berlin a free city. East Berlin countered with a show of force, drawing a four power protest for violating Berlin’s status.
A.E.B. Ollie Herrmann of Amarillo urged TIPRO to back a broad program to reduce oil imports further. He said Texas cuts to eight producing days may expand if other states pledge production cuts, opposing any drop in crude prices and stressing Congress must address imports. The committee also reviewed natural gas price issues.
