Late yesterday eastern Panhandle and South Plains saw light showers with no repeat forecast. Amarillo reported a shower at 8:15 p.m. leaving .03 inch in the Globe News gauge. McLean had drizzle for a trace while Grover measured .50 inch from another shower.
High winds and rain swept Estelline and nearby Hulver and Parnell on May 1. Numerous barns chicken houses and sheds were destroyed or damaged at farms including Clinton Richburg W B Davidson Pete Woods Leslie Bruce and Leslie Bruce. Power lines were toppled and trees blown down as roofs and porches were ripped away and a water tank at Parnell Cotton Gin was destroyed.
Premier Ngo Dinh Diem won the power scramble as an attempted coup by a Bao Dai backer collapsed in Saigon. Diem remained head of South Viet Nam amid the turmoil.
The Vietnamese Army returned to Diem’s faction after Gen Nguyen Van Vy fled to Dalat amid an attempted coup. Vy abandoned his bid for supreme power, while Bao Dai faced deposition by the National Revolutionary Committee which warned him to withdraw French links and conference plans. Cannes exile Bao Dai remained secluded.

Nominations for the Family of the Year close at 6 p.m. today. A Bronx family mourns William Blankenship Jr., 15, killed amid youth crime. His father vows to move the family to Pennsylvania as police report a rise in under 16 and 16 to 21 crime. Police say a mistaken identification by Frank Santana sparked the incident near a north Bronx lot.
Mrs. Bill Moody of 1102 Arthur reported a brown horse missing with 800 to 850 pounds, mane reached, shoes on all feet, grass halter. An Amarillo Daily News and Globe-Times classified ad titled Strayed: Brown horse aided its recovery, contact DR4-0209.
House Speaker Sam Rayburn and Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson, both Texas Democrats, urged setting state and party loyalties aside for national interests at a Mayflower Hotel brunch in Washington. They warned of danger and stressed unity, praising cooperation with President Eisenhower and noting their long service and leadership in Congress. Justices Black and Harlan and Gov. Wetherby attended among other guests.

Winners included Jan Wood for highest flying kite at 225 feet, Becky Ann Major for most string, Tommy Brooks for first 225 feet, Lynn Saunders for most unique kite, and Garrey Kennedy for smallest flying kite.
