Mrs. Frank Mitchell of 409 Forrest Street reports her three year old Silver laced hen is transforming into a rooster. The bird shows rooster feathers a large comb gills spurs and long tail feathers as it learns to crow for the first time about a month ago. It remains Amarillo's only rooster hen and may have set eggs and raised chicks.
A grand jury returned an indictment against Ralph Wilson a 53 year old ranch hand for murder in the Saturday pool room shooting of Ed Littleton a 59 year old livestock auctioneer and farmer. Wilson to be arraigned Thursday.
Eleven year old Rosalee Brenon was kidnapped then doped and released. Found on a neighbor porch at 2 am in a dazed condition after leaving home to go to a downtown theater. She could not recall events or recognize her parents and neighbors.
Houston police report 17 traffic deaths in the first four months of 1938, compared with 19 in the same period of 1937. Lyons Cansler, 30, from La Porte died in a mishap near Baytown, raising Harris County fatalities for the year to 32.
Governor W Lee O Daniel appoints E L Kurth of Lufkin Walter Dillard of New Braunfels and Paul T Sanderson of Trinity to the state prison board in Austin May 1.
The notice reports Tuesday conditions with partly cloudy skies and cooler air across Amarillo and vicinity and west Texas Panhandle. Texas WPA will cut 7,320 workers in May with an effective date of May 8. State director Al Mellinger cited lack of funds and said total WPA employment across Texas will be reduced to 90,500.
Los Angeles May 1 Bruce Cabot film star injured slightly in an automobile accident. Four Pasadena College students also hurt including Paul G Darrow 22 John Lucas 21 Margaret Cuppert 16 and Ernest Slowman 18 all listed with minor injuries.
Gov. W. Lee O'Daniel signed corrective bills removing supreme court objections to a Texas National Guard armory project. The plan allows city and county donations of sites for two Amarillo armories, each costing about 100000 or more, funded by revenue bonds without state debt. Amarillo submitted two sites, one in South Amarillo facing protest, the other in West Amarillo unopposed.
President Roosevelt asked Congress for 185 440 000 dollars to expand the army air corps and 21 062 500 dollars to increase the Panama Canal Zone garrison. A new Caribbean military department was created with Brig. Gen. Edmund L. Daley in charge at San Juan Puerto Rico.
ALPINE May 1 Scientists and educators attend the 19th annual meeting of the Southwestern Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science held in Alpine. The gathering aligns with the formal dedication of McDonald Observatory on Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains, with talks by Otto Struve Robert Hutchins Homer Rainey Arthur Compton and E F Carpenter. The symposium runs through May 8 and includes Powell lectures and the "Physics Views the Future" address.
An Amarillo caravan departs this morning for Guymon Oklahoma to take part in the seventh annual Pioneer Day fiesta. Led by Milt Cox and Cal Farley Amarillo Rotarians are urged to dress in cowboy attire for the Western celebration featuring a grand parade with 27 bands, a Panhandle floats lineup, an Amarillo American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, a 2:30 rodeo, boxing matches, dances, and a late night performance by Lloyd Snyder and his orchestra.

The House backed most of a 172 604 765 dollar interior department appropriation in compromise form and sent it to the Senate. Amendments would provide 500000 for Lugert Altus flood control in Oklahoma with matching funds, allow part of 2 million for the All American Canal to cover distribution and drainage, allocate 5 million for the Colorado River flood control in Texas with reimbursement for Marshall Ford Dam, and 5 million for water conservation and utilization in the Great Plains arid and semi arid areas.
Brig Gen Vladimir Kokkinaki and Maj Mikail Gordienko, who crashed off New Brunswick during a Russia to New York non stop attempt, arrived at Floyd Bennett Field aboard a rescue plane rented by the Soviet embassy. They were ferried from Moncton after being evacuated from Miscou Island in two small planes.

In Austin lawmakers pressed to clear several bills before the tax renewal fight. The House approved an 88 to 43 vote to release penalties and interest on delinquent taxes and moved on a road bond fund surplus measure, while debates on a sales tax amendment continued with votes near the needed two thirds. The session risks extending beyond May 9 as key money bills await Senate action and possible conference committees.
