Budget debate prompts new tax revenue push in Senate

May 1 report notes the House economy bill collapsed forcing Senate leaders to seek additional revenue through the billion dollar tax measure. Egyptian Mummy Cleared as Dried Fish by Polish Customs

A Polish customs office in Gdynia admitted an Egyptian mummy destined for a Warsaw museum as dried fish, charging duty under that classification after confusion over the lack of mummy provisions in the tariff. The decision ends a lengthy puzzling over how to classify the relic.

Thalia Massie to Testify in Retrial of Four Hawaiians

Robert Bell of New York said his niece Mrs. Thalia Massie will testify at the retrial of four Hawaiians charged with assaulting her last September 12. The Massie case follows the conviction of Lieut. Thomas H. Massie and others in the slaying of Kahaha wai in revenge for the attack.

France Gives Party Leaders Return Ballot

Play School Opens Tuesday in Amarillo Panhandle area

More than 60 representatives from five Panhandle counties meet in Amarillo Tuesday to discuss rural recreation. The U S Department of Agriculture creates a Bureau of Recreation to aid farming communities with play and diversion as well as work. Judge Stuart Knapp will speak. Miss Mary Sitton says Carson Gray Hemphill Wheeler and Potter counties will be represented. The four day school runs Tuesday to Friday with sessions and locations announced. Demonstrators aim to improve farm life and home making and plan musical and other programs for local entertainment.

Heavy lineup at opening of Amarillo federal court session

Federal Judge James C. Wilson opens the Amarillo term of the Northern District of Texas as a heavy docket begins. Criminal, civil and equity cases fill the schedule with liquor conspiracy fraud mail fraud counterfeiting and Dyer auto theft cases noted. Grand jury selection and petit jurors are planned from local veniremen. Officials arrived yesterday and await morning proceedings.

Auto Crash Claims Victim Harry N. Harper

Harry N. Harper 40 of 412 North Fillmore Street died at St. Anthony's Hospital from injuries after a Saturday crash that involved a one ton truck in which he and nine others were riding. The truck overturned following a collision with a sedan driven by Hershel Fulbright. Harper leaves a widow Opal and three daughters plus a son. He had lived in Amarillo six years, working for Lydick Roofing Company and was a member of the I O O F.

East Texas Oil Theft Ring Netted in Gregg County Roundup

In a sweeping crackdown officers arrested eleven men in Gladewater and Center as part of a sprawling scheme to steal from East Texas oil fields. Warrants for twenty others followed, with 213 theft charges filed in Longview. Authorities alleged over one million barrels were diverted via by-passes, disrupting wells including one near the First Baptist church.
