MEMPHIS May 1 A Civil War era bonnet made in 1861 and owned by R N Gillis of Memphis links to his mother Mrs Hugh Gillis born Rhoda Ann Duke in Alabama. J. L. Smith, pioneer banker, died suddenly at his home on Taylor street Saturday night. funeral arrangements were not yet definite but services were anticipated Tuesday. Mrs. Smith, her sister Mrs. Earl Cobb, Mr. Cobb and two children arrived from Little Rock Ark. two Houston sisters and niece Mrs. Mary Bynum Owens from San Antonio joined the family. Smith died of heart trouble after eight years in wholesale grocery and banking here.
