Diagram shows how victims were trapped by collapsing walls of a cave in hole opened to probe the mine last week. Cavities in moist sand lie between the tunnel top and upper 10 feet of compacted clay, with material removed during tunnel construction leaving a crust that buckled and fell.
The United Auto Workers set May 12 for a 75,000 strike at Chrysler. John L. Lewis called soft coal operators to begin bargaining May 18 as the present contract nears its June 30 expiry. Federal mediators warned a nationwide rail strike could be delayed with possible recommendations. The CIO United Electrical Workers finished legal steps for a 200,000 member strike against General Electric and Westinghouse. More than 190,000 workers are involved in thestrike.
The forecast calls for temperatures to average 6 to 8 degrees above normal across Texas west of the Gulf Plains. No significant daily changes are expected. Little to no precipitation is anticipated.

In Tucumcari on April 30 three bureau workers died in an earthslide while probing a cave-in near the Conchas Dam irrigation tunnel. J A Kievsky and Tony Ortega were praised for efforts to free Reeves Berg and Fulton. Reeves and Berg died of asphyxiation. St Patton died instantly. Fulton’s body was rushed to hospital but revived efforts failed.
In Chicago on April 30 a 26 year old mother, Florence Manganiello, was fined 100 dollars and costs for holding her three year old son Louis Jr over a gas jet to scare him into stopping gas use. She claimed she wanted to frighten him to curb the habit. Judge Mason S. Sullivan heard the cruelty to a child case as the mother and her separated husband Louis Sr faced an ongoing divorce.
Tickets are free for adults to attend the May 4 concert by the Amarillo Philharmonic Orchestra. Tickets available at the News-Globe office until 11 p.m. Guest artist will be Isaac Stern, violinist.
Two Amarillo children were hospitalized after separate early night crashes. Perry Woods, 7, sustained brain concussion, a broken collar bone and a leg fracture when hit by a car driven by Leslie M. Moulton, 28, in the 1200 block of North Fillmore. Patricia Tennison, 3, suffered possible brain concussion after a car driven by E. J. Sherer struck her in the 1000 block of North East Eighth. Police reported no charges yet. witnesses pursued Sherer after the collision.
Life Magazine announced price increases today raising single copies to 20 cents and annual subscriptions from 5.50 to 6 dollars. The moves follow a previous March 29 adjustment for subscriptions.
Bay City druggist F. W. Daehne and two friends saved a Brahman bull from a cement watering tank with a punch to the nose after the animal struggled to escape. The bull charged, Daehne redirected it with a hat and pole, then fled, while the rescuer found safety at a nearby farmhouse. The incident occurred near the Caney Club in Rancher W. D. Cornelius’s pasture.

Amarillo observes Admiral Ralph Smith Riggs with a 1 30 pm commissioning at the Naval Reserve Training Center and a 7 30 pm banquet at the Herring Hotel Crystal Ball Room. Parade 12 30 pm from Second and Polk to Tenth and Polk with units from Will Rogers Range Riders Amarillo College Band and ROTC cadets.
