Italian advance guard nears Addis Ababa as the capital faces likely fall. Emperor Haile Selassie returns from the north and pledges Ethiopia will continue the fight. Fear spreads among natives while foreigners seek refuge in legations as planes strike near the city.
Miss Azadia Newman, a young Washington photographer, paints Vice-President Garner and actor Walter Huston plus Senator Gore in her New York show opening May 8 at Edrich-Newhouse Galleries. She recalls Garner calling her “little lady” and advising on teeth care as she paints political figures.

In Lamesa a jury found Monte Bridges guilty of murder in the July 1 1934 slayings of Jay Donaldson and Bertha Gordon near Post. The panel set a 20 year penitentiary sentence after four hours and twenty minutes of deliberation. The state sought the death penalty and Bridges claimed Tommy Spears fired the fatal shots after a roadside argument.
Maj. Gen. John Kennedy head of Alabama's Confederate veterans threatened a pension march on Montgomery if pensions are not increased. He demanded tapping a surplus in the pension fund to raise pay for soldiers of the sixties.
Judges praise Panhandle musicians at the 22nd Panhandle Music Festival opening at Polk Street Methodist Church. Contestants from Arnett to Tucumcari receive high ratings, with solo and ensemble events continuing through today and Saturday.
Berlin reports that eleven people were killed when a German military airplane crashed during night air defense maneuvers at Neu Ulm Bavaria. Munich dispatch to London claims fifteen killed including the entire crew and several civilians.

The nine day occupation by unemployed protesters in Trenton ended as 200 people evacuated from the New Jersey state house at 12:45 A.M. without securing relief funds. The legislature adjourned for five days, and the group pledged to form a Farmer-Labor party to elect its own legislators.
U S Army judge advocate general officer Col. Joseph I McMullen was convicted in Washington of accepting illicit compensation from a private firm. A District of Columbia Supreme Court jury deliberated four hours before returning the verdict, with penalties possible up to two years in prison a 10000 dollar fine and removal from government service. Defense lawyer William Leahy said a new trial would be sought and McMullen was released on a 2000 dollar bond. Cuban American Manganese Corp witnesses testified.
London and major European workers plan large May Day protests calling for a united labor front to oppose Fascism and war amid Rhineland tensions and the Italo Ethiopian conflict. The Communist Internationale urged a world united front and London organizers seek a global labor peace conference.
Gray County deputies returned today after an all night search for Pete Traxler an Oklahoma outlaw reported near Pampa late yesterday Traxler outdistanced Gray County officers when first seen and eluded Wheeler County officers after a chase over country roads He was wanted in connection with a holdup on Highway 66 prompting sheriffs from several counties to organize their forces to protect travelers.
Dan Cobb, a black man, died in St Anthony's Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered in a late night shooting in Amarillo's black district. Willie May Ransom remained jailed in Potter County. Cobb had three bullet wounds, one chest and two in the lower back. Patrolman Lloyd Goodrich arrested the suspect at the scene.
Secretary Hull warned of rising danger of a new world war as he outlined the administration’s reciprocal trade program to expand world commerce and peace. The Washington Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution urging continued trade agreements with safeguards for American agriculture and opposing the new tax bill. Harper Sibley of Rochester was reelected president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States for a second term, amid tradition.
The State Railroad Commission extended emergency reduced rates on livestock feed in drought regions. The measure remains in force until June and covers Armstrong, Briscoe, Carson, Castro, Collingsworth, Culberson, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Donley, El Paso, Gray, Hansford, Hartley, Hemphill, Hudspeth, Hutchinson, Jeff Davis, Lamb, Lipscomb, Moore, Ochiltree, Oldham, Palmer, Pecos, Potter, Presidio, Randall, Reeves, Roberts, Sherman, Swisher, Terrell, Ward and Wheeler counties.
A Fort Worth & Denver Railroad agent says a carload of shortening from Sherman to Clayton New Mexico arrived 13 cases short. Dallas railroad yards are suspected as the theft point, with box car burglaries blamed for the shortage.
An airplane crash on Alameda Beach today killed two occupants. Harry Jenkins of Oakland and Irvin Hastings of Richmond, California, were named the victims.
A delegation led by Reps Dies Dempsey and Kramer advised the President on a $1.5 billion PWA work relief allocation for next year. They urged continued support though Roosevelt appeared not to alter his opposition. The group includes Dempsey of New Mexico and Kramer of California.
In Greenville on April 30, Velma Patterson sobbed as defense witnesses testified to a deep bond with her 12 year old daughter Dorothy McCasland, whom she is accused of poisoning. Sister-in-law Mrs Joe Williams testified Dorothy joined a Commerce Methodist Church and attended Sunday school with her mother.
An unidentified man robbed the First National Bank of Pittsfield today and was shot in the back by police as he fled on foot. He was listed in critical condition.
Dallas April 30 Attorney General William C McCraw mailed letters to four Mayors of large U S cities asking for help to stop using the terms Panhandle and Panhandling for beggars. He cites Texans distaste for the terms and notes the Panhandle as a rich wheat oil and cattle region in Texas during the centennial year.
