Nineteen Named by Pacific Finance in Amarillo Suit

A $4.3 million civil suit filed in federal court in Amarillo alleges Billie Sol Estes and associates conspired to defraud Pacific Finance Corp. of Los Angeles. The suit names Estes Enterprises Pecos Superior Manufacturing Amarillo Lester Stone Plainview Gillette McCamey and 19 individuals. It seeks at least $2 million in damages plus attorney fees and a receiver. A hearing is set for April 9 in Amarillo.

It All Began in a Bicycle Shop

J Laurance Martin who died at 71 marked the start of Amarillo’s radio history. In his rear bicycle shop the National Cycle Co first hosted WDAG on 1440 kilocycles, later joining with E B Gish’s KGRS on the same frequency. By 1935 both stations merged into KGNC under Globe-News ownership, laying groundwork for modern radio.

City Banks Show Gain in Amarillo Deposits

Amarillo five banks reported total deposits of 210 676 548 on March 26 1962 up 24 million from a year ago. The figure marks the second highest in local history, with earlier peaks over 200 million in 1961 and a record 219 596 809 reached in December 1961. Loans totaled 105 13 087 for the five banks, up from 92 977 993 a year earlier.
