Wilson Opens Estes Probe in Pecos

Texas Attorney General Will Wilson assigned three assistants to Pecos to investigate possible securities law violations within Billie Sol Estes multi million dollar grain and fertilizer enterprises. The team will inspect books and records and determine the status of Estes holdings and any-law violations amid wide farming and corporate involvement.

Estes and three officers held on transport of forged document

FBI agents arrested Billie Sol Estes of Pecos and three Superior Manufacturing officials in Amarillo and Lubbock on charges of transporting a forged or falsely made chattel mortgage document across state lines. Alexander and Orr were arraigned in Amarillo with bonds set at 250000 each but remain jailed after failing to post. The case, filed in El Paso by U.S. Attorney Morton, follows a Texas attorney general probe into Estes finances and a Dallas finance meeting.

Fire Victim's Rites Pending

A little girl Rita Barrett age 12 and her dog died in a house fire in Clare don. Fire Chief C W Bennett described the scene and quoted the father Jim Barrett as he tried to reach his daughter. The 52 year old contractor suffered burns while his wife and son Jerry 18 escaped unhurt. Fire crews arrived after 6 am to find the wing of the stucco house aflame as neighbors fought spot fires to protect adjacent homes.
