US Department of Agriculture experts led by Dr. E. A. Norton arrived in Amarillo to begin a 10 day survey of wind erosion and economic relief needs in the High Plains. The team includes range men agronomists and officials from Texas New Mexico Oklahoma Kansas and Colorado.

In Point Pleasant Maryland the Club Bison tavern, a ship tied up nearby, was robbed of $130 by two bandits. A large watchdog, calm during the theft, snarled and threatened an officer when police arrived to investigate.
In Austin on March 29 the House adjourned without final tax decisions but indicated support for Gov. Shivers tax program. Rep. Joe Kilgore led approval of the gas tax portion, with about 15 amendments pending and debate over the gathering tax and its inequities. The proposed gas production tax would yield around 14 million dollars yearly, matching a rejected 1951 levy. An amendment by Rep. James Yancy sought to restore the original gathering tax with casing head gas exempt and a higher per thousand cubic feet rate, which Kilgore opposed. The House killed Yancy’s amendment 79-66, and Rep. Baker quickly reintroduced a similar measure with a slightly lower rate.
A cold front moved into Amarillo about 1 30 AM with strong winds and blowing dust. By daybreak winds eased and skies clouded as temperatures rose from a 25 low to a 58 high. Today's forecast calls for a 68 high and a near windy low.
A Texas House bill would allow Panhandle gas to be used for irrigation pumps by exempting gas suppliers delivering for agricultural use from public utility classification. Sponsors are Reps. Hazlett and Wohlford. The issue, tied to cutoffs and regulatory fears, is not in the current special session call.

The Texas state Department of Public Welfare approved direct food relief for 1,210 people in four southeastern Panhandle counties. Allocation includes 400 in Childress, 210 in Collingsworth, 200 in Cottle, and 400 in Dawson with processing ongoing for Terry Motley and Kent counties. A Lubbock warehouse will distribute commodities such as shortening butter cheese canned beef gravy and powdered milk with potatoes and dried beans coming soon.
