Town stunned as shells explode on derailed train
Trac Ried Town in Lewis Indiana faced five hours of fire after artillery shells from three ammunition cars on a derailed train exploded. More than a dozen buildings burned and 300 residents were mostly uninjured due largely to the blast location and people gathering at the Masonic building. Red Cross counted nine houses and four barns destroyed.

Kansas Youth Dies in Crash East of Dalhart
A head on collision on US Highway 54 eight miles east of Dalhart killed Joe Richard Ditrich 17 of Seward Kansas. The accident left three others seriously injured including Larry Gene Julian 17 of St Johns Kansas Oded Lester Shackleford 40 Blackwell Oklahoma and Violet Shackleford 34 injured in the pickup's occupants. All four injured were transported to Loretto Hospital in Dalhart.

Suspect’s Dog Joins Wheatland Posse
In Wheatland Wyoming a murder suspect Clay Tricky Riggles fled after shooting Frances Williamson and Walt Akerblade in a pool hall. A black collie dog joined a Platte County sheriff’s posse hoping to lead to Riggles as investigators reported both victims died from four .22 caliber gunshots.

Four-year-old killed in west Pampa crash
A side swiping collision six miles west of Pampa killed Kelvin Dwain Kelly, 4, and left five others injured. Kelvin died at a Panhandle physician’s office about an hour after the morning crash. Survivors include his parents E W and spouse, and nephew Alfred Kelly 14. Other relatives live in Pampa. Mr and Mrs Kelly and Alfred are listed in serious condition. The two younger brothers Chris and Kurt are also reported lured later.

Two Die and One Hurt in Borger Car Crash
In Borger area a 1949 coupe ran off the highway twelve miles east of town while returning from a fishing trip to Lake Diversion near Wichita Falls. Driver Ralph Breland, 19 of Borger, plus passengers Donald Gene Chilton 23 of Phillips and Ernest Merlin Hooper 26 of Borger died or later died in North Plains Hospital. Breland survived with injuries and is hospitalized in Amarillo.
