About 75 students gathered on Texas Southern University’s campus to protest the firing of a civil rights activist instructor. The crowd swelled to around 300 as doors were barricaded and more than 700 people gathered on Wheeler Street. A bus carrying prisoners to the city jail veered into the crowd, but police did not deploy officers and the bus continued on. The demonstrators then moved to the auditorium.
