In Winona Mississippi 15 year old Kitty Jones said she killed her father and wounded her mother after claiming her parents treated her younger brother better. The father was dead at scene and the mother was hospitalized with three bullet wounds in serious condition.
London March 28 Reuters dispatch from Tokyo reports 136 miners known to have perished in a coal mine fire. Sixty bodies were recovered. The mine locality was not stated in the dispatch.
An election on a $600,000 school bond issue will be held April 19 after a school board meeting. If approved, proceeds will fund additions to Ward schools and possibly a new school, per secretary George M. Waddill. Bonds sold last night at a premium based on buyers’ interest, with Garrett & Company of Dallas as bidders.
Oklahoma City March 24 The head on crash of a passenger train and a freight train seven miles east of El Reno on the Rock Island Lines left no serious injuries but damaged 20 freight cars and two locomotives. Firemen and engineers leaped to safety as both trains collided. Crews believe full cause will be known after Tuesday investigations.
Albany Ore March 28 Dr Knute Houck formerly of Washington DC freed from county jail after coroner jury investigating his wife Gladys Houck death found no responsibility.
Houston dispatch reports Merbert Lieb, son of bond broker Lieb, facing embezzlement and forgery charges, collapsed at his office in Houston after news of the indictment on a fraudulent bond deal. Lieb, jailed on $20,000 bond, had been in custody since the indictment involving an elderly couple. A separate item notes J C Crippen Sr, a 69 year old Waco grocer, died from injuries after a collision with an interurban near Hillsboro.
Amarillo reels in rapid sales for the proposed University of Amarillo site with over 400000 in sales and more than 100000 in University Park lots subscribed in five days. The plan includes an eighty acre campus and 200 acres of lots, plus parks boulevards and a modern home district. The Northwest Texas Methodist Conference meets at Polk Street Church to hear Amarillo's proposal as bishops and ministers arrive to review the site south of Thirty fourth street.
Millie Naharkey known as the poor little rich Indian girl, with an estate valued at 400000 entangled in litigation, is missing from Muskogee. A Kansas man and a glib stranger are linked to her disappearance after a Saturday departure from the Roach ranch. Government agents report few leads as investigators intensify efforts to locate her before possible delivery to abductors in Missouri. She previously vanished in 1922 and was found in poverty in Kansas, detailing alleged abductions and mistreatment. The girl was a star witness in a liquor-for-Indian case against two Tulsa men, now pending appeals.
Two Amarillo police officers and a garage manager were arrested by Chief Gaither on felony charges. Bond was set at 1000 dollars. An investigation linked a reward for J A Clark’s car from Mid West Oil to a false pretenses scheme.
Alma Sue Brooks, 15, daughter of Mrs Lillie D Brooks of 1005 Pierce St, is reported resting easily at a northwest Texas hospital. She was struck noon yesterday by a motor jeep ridden by Newton Lewis at Eleventh and Taylor streets as she stepped from parade lines during a University parade. Her teachers had allowed her to leave the line for lunch at a nearby home.
The forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for partly cloudy skies on Tuesday with mild to warm temperatures. Across West Texas highs are expected generally high and more temperate than elsewhere, with a chance of showers in the southeast portion. Weather notes mention a Utah low pressure system influencing the area and rain in parts of the central Rocky Mountain region and southeastern Texas. Temperature readings show daytime highs in the 60s and 70s with no strong deviations anticipated.
