The In Our Town Ment will open its triennial meeting at 10 a.m. today in the Herring Hotel. Delegates number 22 and come from the Santa Fe Railway Eastern and Western Lines as noted on page 8.
At the American Manufacturing Co. plant in Fort Worth a transformer service incident killed George Haas 42 and seriously injured Randy Galloway 18. They touched a live wire while on the transformer platform Haas fell 30 feet to iron and possibly died from shock or the fall. Galloway suffered burns on hands and back.
Four men from Jal New Mexico, Thomas Purser age 21, Paul Lance 19, Wayne Crady 24, and pilot Gene Armstrong 25, survived a damaged Piper Comanche 260 emergency belly landing at Amarillo Air Force Base after gear failure during landing at the Amarillo Dragstrip.
Texas Democrats face a power struggle as Gov. Connally and Sen. Yarborough clash for party leadership. Delegates to 5,000 precinct conventions on May 7 will choose county delegates for the Sept 20 state convention in Austin, shaping Texas votes in the 1968 presidential race. Liberal Democrats backed by Yarborough aim to tilt toward Sen. Robert Kennedy as Johnson’s reelection looms.
A stray dog named Pickles recovered the World Cup eight days after its theft from a central London exhibition hall. Harold Mayes of the World Cup Organization verified the jug found in Beulah Hill by a garden, bringing back the 10 inch high solid gold cup. A dock laborer, Walter Bletchley, 47, faces charges for the theft and the incident prompted international criticism of Britain’s protection of the prize.
An official report says the U S H bomb found 2500 feet off Palomares Spain has moved deeper after a lift line snapped during an initial recovery attempt. Rear Admiral William S Guest led the naval task force and noted the object and parachute remain in the area but deeper positioning could delay and lengthen the next pull.
The Washington Post says secret talks are under way between the United States and the Viet Cong to secure the release of Gustav C. Hertz, an American captive held nearly 14 months. The effort involves Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and has spanned multiple channels to reach a critical stage. Hertz was kidnapped Feb 2, 1965, while cycling in Saigon suburbs.
India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi arrives in Williamsburg after flying from Paris to Langley Air Force Base. She meets President Johnson in Washington to discuss international issues and aims for closer U S India understanding to promote peace. Her sons Rajiv and Sanjay accompany.
High winds up to 100 miles an hour lash Britain over the weekend causing fatalities and damage. Two North Sea oil rigs were evacuated as helicopters rescued 44 men from the Ocean Prince off the Yorkshire coast after severe waves battered the structure.
In a fierce North Sea gale, the rig Constellation rode 50 foot waves with 90 mile gusts. A lifeboat and tugs stood by as crews evacuated amid collapsing platforms and wrecked shore damage. A 17 year old girl and a 65 year old man died ashore. a Wimbledon child was injured. The Sea Gem disaster is recalled.
Unidentified flying objects were sighted across Michigan again with several reports from Bad Axe and Hillsdale County. Bad Axe police and state troopers observed a bright blue light over Lake Huron for about 30 minutes early Sunday, described as very large and fast moving. Weather balloons were suggested as a possibility by a state trooper, while Hillsdale residents and WCSR assistant manager Dave Keister reported multiple lights hovering and changing color throughout the night.
