Twelve inmates at Nebraska Penitentiary seized two guards and held hostages in the maximum security building. Nine hours into the standoff Gov. Victor Anderson commanded responders as guards and state patrols surrounded the jail. Entitled to food, the insurgents had not eaten since breakfast and showed no sign of surrender.
Sen Case announces a revised federal highway financing plan featuring a heavy vehicle use fee and a national interstate highway right of way corporation to acquire land and raise up to five billion dollars for capital. He projects about 70 billion dollars to complete the 40 000 mile network over ten years, versus 101 billion in the original plan.
Opal Watson 36 and her husband Roy Lee Gilliam 59 were involved in a gunfight at a Dallas barbecue stand after leaving a cafe in Umbarger earlier years. Mrs Watson was shot in the chest and abdomen during the exchange. Arthur James Harris 42, an ex convict, fought with Gilliam. Both men are in custody for investigation.
Police wounded and captured a tattooed suspect after a fierce roadblock gun battle in South Georgia. Four hostages, including a policeman and an FBI agent, were released unharmed as FBI and state troopers joined the chase. The suspect, Robert Gravel, 29, dumped a wounded accomplice from a stolen car after exchanging gunfire. Fred C. Saltsgiver, 31, was hospitalized with a chest wound.
Russia denounces Western secrecy claims at the London disarmament talks and says there was no Soviet agreement to keep the conference secret. Pravda calls the talks a leak and Andrei Gromyko accuses Western powers of blocking agreement.
Former vice president John Nance Garner, 87, plans a Washington trip in mid April to attend a Rayburn dinner. He left Washington in 1941 and hopes to arrive April 16 if health and plans allow. He has arranged travel from San Antonio with a small group.
Twenty four aboard Pan American Airways forced to land off Oregon coast as rescue by USS Bayfield saves survivors. Nineteen living reach Seattle in tears, four bodies recovered. The oldest victim, 80 year old John Peterson of Seattle, dies after cramming into a life raft with his wife Emma who recounts their final moments. One crew member recalls the heartrending cries of those who died.
Amarillo hosts a uranium prospecting class at Amarillo College with sessions on geology map reading land leasing and staking. Braniff Airways will equip a Denver flight with a scintillator and Geiger counter for a week to showcase uranium surveys and prospecting areas to passengers.

A man, wife, two children found dead at a Rock Island farm. The victims are Henry Bratcher, 45, his wife, 43, daughter Lily Mae, 11, and granddaughter Charlotte Ann, 20 months. Bodies located in molasses, sink hole, and cistern. Billy T. Gibbs, 22, of McMinnville, charged with murder after alleged mule and produce sales dispute.
Three men including two police officers and a GM plant guard were arrested on grand larceny charges over theft of top secret style plans for future GM models. Arrested were Elmer Bolia, 27, Thomas Robertson, 32, and Richard Declaire, 23, all from Michigan suburbs.
Sheriff L S Johnston was shocked when two boys ages 8 and 10 brought dozens of dynamite detonator caps to his desk. The children found the caps in a shed on Fred Sorgee property after his home burned. Sorgee said he had the caps for over 20 years from blasting trails in Palo Duro Canyon.
More than 4300 visitors attended the second annual Home Show at Fair Park Coliseum with attendees from 15 Panhandle cities and three New Mexico towns. Exhibitors reported a rush with lines for tours of The Modernaire model home and a chance to win the show.
A sunny warmup graced the Panhandle as a cold front Saturday morning faded. Temperatures in the 40s dotted the area with Amarillo recording a 47 degree high and a 14 degree low, while today foresees partly cloudy skies with warmer readings and winds. highs around 35 and a low near 24.
Winter storm devastated crops and halted transport across the eastern third of the country. Damage reached at least 48 million dollars in the South and Midwest with 33 deaths attributed to the storm. Gales hit New York and New Jersey. upstate New York highways saw zero visibility. Adirondack foothills faced 12 foot drifts. Syracuse received ten inches of snow. The storm marooned boaters on Lake Ontario and damaged ships at New York harbor and in the Gulf of Mexico. Peach crops were wiped out in several southern states. potatoes and strawberries suffered heavy losses. Indiana accounted for 17 of the deaths. temperatures varied widely across major cities as warming was forecast for the East Coast.
